Welcome to the Berkeley Evening & Weekend MBA chat. My name is Sarah and I will be moderating the chat today. I would like to introduce Molly Kihanya, Associate Director of Admissions, Aija Gamburg, Program Coordinator, and Beth Hoch, Assistant Director.
This chat is moderated. Your questions are put into a cue to be answered, so do not be alarmed if we do not respond to you immediately. It is best if you send one question at a time and please do not resend your questions multiple times. They will not be answered more quickly and it may slow us down. Please send us your questions!
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:28:13 PM)
Welcome everyone!
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:28:38 PM)
Hello and thanks for joining us today!
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:29:37 PM)
Hello and welcome everyone!

What visa is required for the EWMBA and working full time for an international student?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:30:48 PM)
We do not have any visa requirements for the EWMBA program.
oa (Feb 21, 2008 3:31:29 PM)
I received 24 units of advanced placement credit for my high-school A-level examinations during my freshman year at UCSB. I had long ago forgotten about this, until recently looking at my college transcripts. I have no transcript information for my A-levels. The exams were taken almost 14 years ago. In fact, I am not even sure which British examination board the exams were taken through (It could have been Oxford, Cambridge, or possibly Univ. of London). Do I have to supply transcripts for these units?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:31:29 PM)
Hi OA, you do not need to supply transcripts for your AP credits. However, we do want transcripts for all -courses- taken towards your undergraduate and graduate degrees.
ParedesJC (Feb 21, 2008 3:31:37 PM)
I am taking the GMAT for the first time on Feb 28th. How can I report my GMAT scores on my application?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:31:37 PM)
You will get an unofficial score report at the test site after the test. Please enter these scores (AWA not included, please enter 0) in your application before submitting it, in addition to requesting the official score report be sent to us.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 3:31:53 PM)
My question pertains to the Resume. What kind of information would you prefer to be highlighted on the resume. Presumably, this type of resume for a techie like me would be incomprehensible to the admissions committee. What would you like to see in it?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:31:53 PM)
Max - please highlight your accomplishments in your resume. A standard 1 to 2 pages is perfect.
Poe (Feb 21, 2008 3:32:44 PM)
Hello admissions staff. Do you plan to release any of the round 1 decisions before March 14th? Thank you.
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:32:44 PM)
Hello Poe. We do not release decisions early. On 3/14 your online application status will be updated to reflect the admissions decision.
shelly (Feb 21, 2008 3:32:59 PM)
As one of your older candidates, I have an extensive work history with one company and am having a difficult time tracking down exact salary ranges for the start and end of various projects/positions. How accurate do the numbers need to be?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:32:59 PM)
Please do your best to provide as much information as possible. Of course, it's more important that the recent information is complete. If we have questions, we'll ask you.
Travis (Feb 21, 2008 3:33:16 PM)
Hi as an alum. I'd really like to attend and be a part of CAL again. Can you talk about any difference in admissions and the fit for professionals for your Weekend/Evening program versus your standard program?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:33:16 PM)
Hi Travis, the profile of students for the EWMBA is a little different than for our full-time MBA. EWMBA students on average have more work experience (8 years versus 5). The other big difference is that the full-time program recruits internationally, and the EWMBA students are usually already working in the Bay Area/West Coast. Go Bears!
haasmba (Feb 21, 2008 3:34:10 PM)
Hello. Do my transcripts need to arrive before Feb 29th deadline or is it okay to submit the online application by Feb 29th and for the transcripts to arrive at a later date (in a week or two)? And how many copies of transcripts do you require?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:34:10 PM)
We require one official copy of your transcripts. Transcripts should be postmarked by Feb 29th, and it is OK if they are a little late, as long as the online application was submitted by midnight on Feb 29th!
Sebastian (Feb 21, 2008 3:34:39 PM)
The US has visa requirements. Problem is that there exists a student visa, which does not allow a full time job. So is there a visa which allows working but not studying?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:34:39 PM)
Most of our students work full-time and have a visa. We do not provide student visas for the EWMBA program. If you want to discuss off line, you can email me and we'll set up a time to talk, mkihanya@haas.berkeley.edu.
MBA08 (Feb 21, 2008 3:35:06 PM)
Is it too late to apply as a reapplicant?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:35:06 PM)
Hi MBA08. No, a reapplicant can apply for the round 2 deadline (2/29) just like a new applicant. Please refer to the specific instructions in the application materials to determine what parts of your application you need to complete.
Mariam (Feb 21, 2008 3:35:24 PM)
Hi. I would like to know when the deadline is for taking the GMAT. I am registered to take the test on March 7th. Is it too late?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:35:24 PM)
Yes. In order to apply for the Feb 29th deadline, you must take the GMAT on or before Feb 29th. If you would like to discuss a possible extension for the GMAT score, please contact me after the chat by email.
haasmba (Feb 21, 2008 3:36:28 PM)
When are the interview invitations sent out? I have an out of the country trip for a few weeks that I need to make sometime around the 3rd week of May and would love to adjust the schedule accordingly with the interview dates.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:36:28 PM)
We will interview round 2 candidates during the entire review period, March through May. You can send us an email to let us know when you will be out of the country, and we will accommodate your schedule.
Entr_Appln_08 (Feb 21, 2008 3:37:26 PM)
I have over 6 years of professional experience, have an advanced degree in engineering and am working for a high technology startup for the last 5 years in various roles, from intern to a team lead. I am passionate about entrepreneurship but understand the challenges involved with it and hence my quest for doing an MBA. Here is my goal for applying for EWMBA at Haas: To learn different aspects of the business such as finance, marketing and strategy and build the foundation for a successful career as an entrepreneur and general manager. I was a little concerned whether this is too broad or unrealistic a goal. Please advise and also what I can do to support this goal. Thanks in advance.
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:37:26 PM)
I don't feel comfortable offering advice on your specific goals (because we can't do that for everyone). However, I can tell you that we like goals to be as specific as possible and we also like to see a roadmap from short term to long term. We know your goals may change but please try to be as specific as possible at this point in your career.
oa (Feb 21, 2008 3:37:33 PM)
The essays seem to be designed to get a sense of who I am as a person. Are the "Job Responsibilities" sections under employment the correct place to outline job accomplishments as well as responsibilities? If not, where would be the appropriate place to do this?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:37:33 PM)
oa, yes you are correct. Essays should be personal, and professional accomplishments will be gleaned from your employment history, resume and letters of recommendation.
Vijay (Feb 21, 2008 3:37:49 PM)
Is the weekend MBA alternate week or every week?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:37:49 PM)
Hi Vijay. The weekend cohort meets every Saturday during the normal semester.
caridei (Feb 21, 2008 3:38:22 PM)
I noticed that there is a math waiver for high GMAT Q scores but not statistics ...can you explain?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:38:22 PM)
The GMAT does not test statistics, so it can only be used as a waiver for our math prerequisite. Prerequisite details are available here: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/req.html#prereq
Max (Feb 21, 2008 3:39:16 PM)
I am planning on switching industries and plan to lay the groundwork during my MBA program. How do you view such applicants who are taking risks and articulating those in their medium and long term goals and have just started laying down the foundation for them?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:39:16 PM)
You are welcome to switch careers in the MBA program. We look at all goals and like to see how specific they are and your path from one to the other (ie roadmap).
Pearl (Feb 21, 2008 3:39:31 PM)
Hello, I have a question on GMAT scores. I took the GMAT in Jan. 2008 and in Feb. 2008. But my score dropped from a 700 to a 620. Do I have to provide the details of the second test in the application?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:39:31 PM)
We will look at your highest score. Technically, you only need to enter one score in the application, but your second score will be visible to us through the official score report.
DC (Feb 21, 2008 3:39:58 PM)
Hi! I have requested my 2 recommenders for their recommendation a while back. However, I just checked the status of my application and realized they still have yet to submit their forms. I will, of course, politely remind them again. What would happen to my application if they simply do not submit the form by Feb 29th? Thanks.
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:39:58 PM)
Hi DC. Your application will remain incomplete until we have all of the application materials, and cannot be reviewed before it is complete. Please remind your recommenders to complete their forms by 2/29.
ZH (Feb 21, 2008 3:40:32 PM)
Hi, question regarding TOEFL waiver. I have a full-time engineering degree from an English university (McGill) in French speaking Canada. Does that qualify?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:40:32 PM)
Hi ZH: Yes, a degree from a country where the official language is English will allow you waive the TOEFL.
rd (Feb 21, 2008 3:41:45 PM)
Is the International Business seminar open to EWMBA students?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:41:45 PM)
Yes, the International Business Seminar is an elective for EWMBA students. We have 5 trips a year which happen during winter break, spring break and summer break. They are 1 -2 weeks in length (depending on the break).
Sebastian (Feb 21, 2008 3:42:10 PM)
Regarding recommendations. My first boss is now somewhere in ASIA. Pretty difficult to get in contact with him. And my current boss, I do not really want him to know that I might leave very soon. So what about recommendation letters?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:42:10 PM)
Hi Sebastien, since we are a part-time program, we do expect a letter from your current direct supervisor. The best choice for letters are people who have supervised you recently, and for an extended period of time. Your supervisor's boss is another option.
shelly (Feb 21, 2008 3:42:37 PM)
Employment History Question: I worked at a privately held company and did not have direct access to annual sales figures. Would you prefer I made a best guess or left that field blank?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:42:37 PM)
Shelly, you can leave it blank if you wish.
caridei (Feb 21, 2008 3:42:38 PM)
I read that some of the classes for EWMBA are being provided in the San Jose area. Can you provide this location?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:42:38 PM)
Hi Caridei. About a half of the weekend cohort classes are taught at a South Bay location, and the rest of the classes meet here at Haas. Usually the South Bay location is in the Santa Clara area. The students travel back and forth between the two locations.
AlexK (Feb 21, 2008 3:43:09 PM)
I took GMAT on 2/16 and I know all my scores except AWA which will be known only in 20 days. How do complete and submit the application before the 2/29 deadline without AWA score?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:43:09 PM)
Hi AlexK, that's fine and expected. Simply put 0.0 in the AWA field, and we will update it later when we receive your official score report.

Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:43:32 PM)
ewmbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu
DC (Feb 21, 2008 3:44:12 PM)
Hi again, I took the GMAT in January and did well on the Verbal section (above 90th percentile). However, I scored a "5" on my AWA (which is equivalent to the 61st percentile). Is a "5" (i.e. 61st percentile) a bad writing score?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:44:12 PM)
Hi DC, 5 is not bad, our medial score for admits is a 4.9. We are more concerned with your essays in the application than the AWA essay.
MBA08 (Feb 21, 2008 3:44:22 PM)
Thank you for answering my query. In the reapplicant essay, should the focus be more on the professional accomplishments since the last application or should it include a laundry list of all professional and personal /extra-curricular activities?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:44:22 PM)
With regard to your reapplicant essay, please provide any information that would be helpful for the admissions committee to understand what has changed since last year.
Vijay (Feb 21, 2008 3:44:44 PM)
I have noticed on the site that it says Alternate places - on-campus and Silicon Valley center. So, I am wondering where I would attend each week?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:44:44 PM)
The class schedule for the weekend cohort is finalized before the semester begins, and is slightly different every year.
ZH (Feb 21, 2008 3:45:07 PM)
There is a mention of "official degree certificate" in the application instructions for international applicants. Is an official transcript from McGill sufficient, or do I still need to get this certificate? If so, is it possible to get the certificate post 02/29?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:45:07 PM)
Hi ZH, for McGill, a degree certificate is not required because they issue American-style transcripts that list your degree and date issued.
nithi (Feb 21, 2008 3:46:09 PM)
What is the deadline to apply for fall EWMBA?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 21, 2008 3:46:09 PM)

Hi AlexK. You can just enter 0 for the AWA score. We will enter it to your application when we verify your score.
Entr_Appln_08 (Feb 21, 2008 3:46:42 PM)
What differentiates a great recommendation from an good one?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:46:42 PM)
Hi, a great recommendation is written with genuine enthusiasm and provides details and examples about your professional accomplishments and leadership potential. The best letters usually come from someone who has supervised you recently, closely, and for an extended period of time.
caridei (Feb 21, 2008 3:47:21 PM)
I have read from several sources that full time MBA applications are down this year. Has this been observed in the Berkeley EWMBA for 08 as well?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:47:21 PM)
I am not sure where you are getting the data but both the full time and the Evening & Weekend programs don't report that data until the end of the admissions season, usually in the summer.
sj_cal (Feb 21, 2008 3:47:52 PM)
How much does the AWA matter?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:47:52 PM)
sj_cal, it matters, but not as much as the other sections of the GMAT and the essays in the application itself. It will matter more if your first language is not English.
mridul (Feb 21, 2008 3:48:38 PM)
Hello, my question is regarding recommendation letter. I am planning to apply for Evening program in this fall. There is a major lay off happening at my company. No one is sure who will stay. Is it possible to take a recommendation letter in advance and submit it later in Fall to University?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:48:38 PM)
It's better to have a current recommendation. I would suggest that you stay in touch with your supervisors (present and past) so that you can ask them for a rec when you apply. Thanks for checking!
ketan (Feb 21, 2008 3:49:24 PM)
Hi -what is deadline for sending application material by mail (transcripts, etc)
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:49:24 PM)
Mailed material must be postmarked by February 29th.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 3:50:18 PM)
Do you post the electives offered by the Sat and the Weekend program anytime soon. My concern is that if I choose the Sat option I might not be offered the same breadth of electives as the weekend option and I do have to give my cohort preference now? Thanks.
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:50:18 PM)
Hi Max. During the first year everyone takes the same 10 core courses. After your first year you can take electives in either the evening or weekend cohort.
ZH (Feb 21, 2008 3:50:31 PM)
What's tested on the statistics waiver exam? I bought "Statistics: A First Course with Data CD-Rom, by Donald H. Sanders", which is the official book for the Berkeley Extension Stats class. Do you have any recommended prep material for stats waiver exam?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:50:31 PM)
Yes, they are on our website at http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/WaiverExams.pdf.
wb (Feb 21, 2008 3:51:46 PM)
Hi, I have a question on Resume and Employment History. Should we avoid redundant information in both? Is the Resume used to address the accomplishment and Employment History or the responsibility?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:51:46 PM)
Hi wb. We like the resume to be 1 page (2 at the most) focused on accomplishments. You are welcome to add more details in the Employment History section if you wish.
Entr_Appln_08 (Feb 21, 2008 3:52:33 PM)
I am not from the Bay Area and so I haven't had the chance to personally visit the campus or attend classes. I have tried to get information through chat sessions, web and talking to alumni. Would I be at a disadvantage?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:52:33 PM)
No, you would not be at a disadvantage. The information sessions and class visits are offered to the applicants as a way to learn more about the program, but not attending them will not affect your application.
rd (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:26 PM)
Can you give us an idea of how many seats are left to be filled for the incoming class?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:26 PM)
100%! The round 1 decisions are released March 14. Typically we admit the same percentage of applicants in both rounds, and we know to save plenty of seats for round 2!
awaaz (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:29 PM)
Is there a GMAT cutoff score?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:29 PM)
Hi Awaaz. We do not have a cutoff for GMAT, however the range of scores for admitted students is usually around 640 to mid 700s.
nithi (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:51 PM)
I haven't worked anywhere, will I still be eligible for the EWMBA and also do I have to submit all the documents along with the application or can I do it later like taking GMAT.
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:51 PM)
Dear Nithi, you are welcome to apply but most of the admitted students have about 8 years of work experience. Please see the class profile, http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/class.html. All information (including a GMAT score) must be complete by the deadline. This year's Round 2 deadline is February 29th.
Molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:53 PM)
I have two questions. Is it possible to apply simultaneously to the Weekend & Evening MBA program and the full-time program? I prefer to attend the Weekend & Evening program, but I am relatively young compared to the typical admit for that program (I will have only 4 years of work experience at the time of applying) so I realize I am more likely to be accepted into the fulltime program.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:53:53 PM)
No, you can only apply to one UC Berkeley grad program per year.
Pearl (Feb 21, 2008 3:54:25 PM)
I have an engineering degree from an Indian University. The transcript has the score 4700/5600 - First Class with distinction. How should I convert this to the GPA scale?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:54:25 PM)
We are familiar with international transcripts. There is no need to convert to the GPA scale. Thanks for checking.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 3:54:47 PM)
I have not articulated my long term goals to my recommenders as it involves both entrepreneurship and switching industries. They are recommending me based on their assessment of my personality and my performance. This means there is probably no mention of my long term vision in the recommendation. Is that a problem? Thanks.
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:54:47 PM)
No, that is fine.
Ali_S (Feb 21, 2008 3:55:27 PM)
Hi there, just to press the reapplicant essay a little more, it says how you have improved your candidacy, is it to focus on active steps to improve EWMBA application, or all areas that strengthens the candidate?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:55:27 PM)
Please use your best judgment. Feel free to include anything you think would be helpful to the admissions committee.
DM (Feb 21, 2008 3:55:29 PM)
I applied for the full time program in the fall, and now I'm applying for the EWMBA, so it’s qualifying me as a reapplicant. Not much about my profile has changed since the fall. Is it ok for me to basically state that nothing has changed and explain why, or should I really try to find something that's changed that I can talk about?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:55:29 PM)
DM, since you are a reapplicant from the full-time program, the most important question to address in the reapplicant essay is why are you now applying to the EWMBA program.
ewmba_guy (Feb 21, 2008 3:56:11 PM)
My immediate supervisor joined last month - do I still have to get his recommendation for this MBA program ?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:56:11 PM)
No, if you have worked for your current direct supervisor for a very limited amount of time, we will understand if you do not submit a recommendation from them.
mridul (Feb 21, 2008 3:57:16 PM)
Do you think its better to have a recommendation letter (paper based) from my boss now and keep it just in case he is not available later. As you know, sometime it is difficult to chase down supervisors later.
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:57:16 PM)
We change the application and recommendation letters slightly from year to year. It's really up to you.
Al (Feb 21, 2008 3:57:33 PM)
Could you please give a little more detail about the essay question related to failed classes and being put on probation? Specifically, what do you mean by "Explain"?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:57:33 PM)
Hi Al, we would like you to address the reason/circumstances behind the failing grade or probation.
DC (Feb 21, 2008 3:58:01 PM)
In the application for the EWMBA, there is a check box for whether or not I would be interested in the Executive MBA program. What is the purpose of the check box? Or more specifically, would check versus unchecking hurt my chance of getting in to the EWMBA?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:58:01 PM)
Checking or unchecking the BCEMBA box does not affect your chances of being admitted to the EWMBA program, neither does it mean that you are automatically considered for the Executive MBA program. If the Admissions Committee determines that you might be a better fit for that program, they will contact the applicant.
Entr_Appln_08 (Feb 21, 2008 3:58:34 PM)
My undergrad GPA is not great but my grad gpa is great and my GMAT is in the 99% percentile. How should I answer the question "Whether your academic performance truly reflects your potential". Should I explain the reasons for the not so great undergraduate record? I am asking this as my scale of not so great might be different from adcom's.
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:58:34 PM)
You are welcome to explain your UG record in the question you stated above. It's better to give us too much information than not enough!
MBA08 (Feb 21, 2008 3:59:27 PM)
Is it true that some reapplicants are not invited for interview if they had a good interview the previous year?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 3:59:27 PM)
We do not always interview reapplicants. Those decisions are made on a case by case basis.
samba (Feb 21, 2008 3:59:30 PM)
Hi, for EWMBA, how accessible are the professors? Are they full time prof's that can be accessed in their official timings.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 3:59:30 PM)
Hi Samba, our faculty is the same as the full-time program. The professors are very accessible and often hold office hours during the breaks of their evening or weekend courses.
Liping Yang (Feb 21, 2008 3:59:53 PM)
For round 1 applications, is it possible to get the decision before March 14th?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 3:59:53 PM)
Hi Liping. We do not release admissions decisions before 3/14.
wb (Feb 21, 2008 4:00:25 PM)
To follow up my previous question on employment history. Do you expect a short essay type of answer with stories?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:00:25 PM)
Hi wb, applicants enter job responsibilities in both list and paragraph form. Please use your best judgment.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 4:00:47 PM)
I do not have enough volunteer work to show on my resume. Will that work against me?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:00:47 PM)
Max - We like to see what outside activities you engage in when you are not working. We look at all of the elements in your application.
Entr_Appln_08 (Feb 21, 2008 4:01:01 PM)
Can you give an idea as to whether there is an increase in the number of applications this year compared to last year? Just in the ballpark.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:01:01 PM)
We will not release any numbers until the summertime. Sorry!
ewmba_guy (Feb 21, 2008 4:01:56 PM)
Hi I joined my company as Software engineer but now I am being promoted to product management role...does this switch of responsibility affect my application positively or negatively ?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:01:56 PM)
Dear ewmba_guy - the admissions committee likes to see how people progress in their careers and what they have accomplished. I would say a promotion is positive! :)
sj_cal (Feb 21, 2008 4:02:05 PM)
Can I do one paper format and one electronic format for the letters of recommendation?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:02:05 PM)
Yes, you can have one recommendation submitted electronically, and one as a hard copy. Please remember to uncheck the electronic recommendation box for the second recommender before sending the email to the recommenders.
ParedesJC (Feb 21, 2008 4:02:17 PM)
Do you have any bias for people that currently work/live outside the bay area. I would, if admitted, seek a transfer or a new job. Should I state this somewhere in my application?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:02:17 PM)
Hi Padres, we do not have any bias for or against applicants outside the Bay Area. It is helpful to let us know if you plan to relocate or commute. This will help us better understand your goals.
davidsfo (Feb 21, 2008 4:03:14 PM)
Is the address different if I use Fedex to mail my application material to you?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:03:14 PM)
No, our mailing address for USPS and FedEx is the same: Evening & Weekend MBA Admissions, Haas School of Business, 430 Student Services Building # 1906, Berkeley, CA 94720-1906.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 4:03:36 PM)
I have asked my current supervisor to give a recommendation. It’s been about half a year since he became my direct supervisor but I work with him on a daily basis. Additionally, he has known me for more than 3-4 years in the same company. Should that be good enough?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:03:36 PM)
It's most important that you feel like your recommender is able to offer insight about you and provide examples.
haasmba_applicant (Feb 21, 2008 4:04:16 PM)
Hi, a question on the extracurricular activities section...Should activities for your own employer outside of your normal job responsibilities
like conducting team building exercises be mentioned here?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:04:16 PM)
You can add them here if you like.
oa (Feb 21, 2008 4:04:32 PM)
Are there any requirements for how the Application Supplemental Materials should be mailed? For instance, on First Class Mail, or only registered mail.
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:04:32 PM)
Hi Oa. All kinds of mail is fine, regular, registered, FedEx, UPS.
davidsfo (Feb 21, 2008 4:05:24 PM)
For short-term and long-term goals. How do you split them? Personally I think 5 year is short, and anything after that will be long-term.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:05:24 PM)
Hi davissfo, we purposely do not define short/medium/and long term goal time periods, so you are free to define them in the way that makes sense for you and your goals. Please use your best judgment.
Rob_Z (Feb 21, 2008 4:05:42 PM)
I held management and supervisory roles in the past; At the present I am in the finance industry (going on three years), but not in a management roll. How is this look upon during the selection process.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:07:01 PM)
Hi Rob, if you explain your career choices to us that should not be a problem. We do look to see that you have increased responsibility over time but that does not have to include formal management roles currently.
Mandar (Feb 21, 2008 4:06:31 PM)
My question is about my AWA score. I scored a 5.0 and feel that the score
does not truly represent my writing skills. I am confident that my essays
will turn out well. My concern is the disconnect that this may end up
bringing out and what would be the best way for me to address the situation
in advance.
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:06:31 PM)
There is a question in the application about whether you feel your academics are a reflection of your ability, you can address it there.
s.v (Feb 21, 2008 4:07:18 PM)
Could you please shed some light as to how you would view an applicant who is changing careers, say from academic biology to management?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:07:18 PM)
s.v - We welcome all industries and realize people want to make career changes. It's important to be clear in your goals about the switch.
MHA (Feb 21, 2008 4:07:38 PM)
I have only college level statistics, but no calculus. I am planning to take MATH XB16A at the Berkeley extension center this summer. MATH XB16A is listed as a prerequisite recognized by the Weekend & Evening MBA program. Is a good grade in that class also recognized as an adequate math prerequisite for the fulltime program?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:07:38 PM)
Hi MHA, you will have to ask full-time MBA admissions.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 4:08:07 PM)
Everyone tells me that being an Indian Male Engineer working in Hi-Tech will work against me during the application. Even if it is statistically accurate, is it true that Haas would try to smoothen the effects of a large number of applicants in a particular demographic by limiting the number admitted?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:08:07 PM)
We choose the best overall candidate in the applicant pool. We do not have quotas.
nithi (Feb 21, 2008 4:08:49 PM)
Can I transfer units from other universities, if so how many units.
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 21, 2008 4:08:49 PM)
We do not accept transfer units from other Universities.
nithi (Feb 21, 2008 4:09:08 PM)
While considering an application can I know what you are looking for in a candidate? My high school score weren't that great but I have worked as a successful software engineer for the last 12 years. Will my high school and grad school scores affect my application
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:09:08 PM)
Hi Nithi, we will not look at your high school grades, but we will look at your undergraduate and graduate GPA's, along with the rigor of your school and the rigor of your major. The three main areas we are looking at are academics, professional accomplishments and personal qualities.
MHA (Feb 21, 2008 4:09:36 PM)
I am a young woman interested in the Evening & Weekend MBA program. I finished my undergrad in '04. Since graduation I have spent 1 year doing research on a fulbright, and will have only 3 years of fulltime work experience at the time of my application the fall of '08 (only 4 years at the time I start the program). Will this put me at a significant disadvantage?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:09:36 PM)
MHA - most of the students have about 8 years of work experience. However, 80% fall into the 5 to 12 year work experience range. It's important that you state your accomplishments clearly. We encourage everyone to apply.
Pearl (Feb 21, 2008 4:09:51 PM)
Is there a separate section for extra curricular activities?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:09:51 PM)
Yes, there is a question under "supplementary data questions".
davidsfo (Feb 21, 2008 4:10:30 PM)
I have a class in my transcript marked as imcomplete. It's not affecting my GPA nor my degree. Do I still have have to write an optional essay to explain it? Thanks
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:10:30 PM)
davidsfo - It's your choice. It's better to give the Admissions Committee more information than not enough.
ewmba_guy (Feb 21, 2008 4:11:07 PM)
Does writing and publishing any technical document on to well-known standard forums considered a professional achievement?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:11:07 PM)
Yes.
DM (Feb 21, 2008 4:11:30 PM)
Is the degree awarded in the EWMBA any different from the full time MBA degree?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:11:30 PM)
Hi DM. No, the degree is the same exact degree as the Full-time MBA degree.
Rob_Z (Feb 21, 2008 4:12:16 PM)
Although I have over six years of previous management history, over the last three years I've maintained a position in the finance sector outside of any supervisory or management roll. How do you believe this may be perceived during the selections process?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:12:16 PM)
This is not uncommon. We are looking for career progression and increased responsibility. It will be important for you to explain your career choices to us.
MHA (Feb 21, 2008 4:12:26 PM)
Thanks Molly- is that 5-12 years of work experience at the time of application or from the program start date?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:12:27 PM)
Program start date.
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:13:08 PM)
We encourage reapplicants to answer all of the essay questions, especially if there are any updates to last year's information. However, if you applied to the EWMBA program last year, you are only required to respond to the reapplicant essay.
colangw (Feb 21, 2008 4:13:16 PM)
Hello...I was accepted for the fall 2007 class but turned down the offer as I was just starting a new job and was a month from having a baby (it's been pretty hectic in the last few months!). I am reapplying and was curious if the fact that I turned down last year's offer would be considered negatively or positively? Thanks
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:13:16 PM)
If you had a good reason, it will not impact you negatively. Chances are good that if you were admitted one year, you will be admitted again, but it cannot be guaranteed.
Mandar (Feb 21, 2008 4:14:38 PM)
Recommendation: I recently moved from a technical role in engineering to a product management role in Planning. Obviously I have a new manager so it wouldn’t make sense to get a recommendation letter from him. Even in my previous job I did not report to a manager for more than 1 year. I feel that a principle in the engineering role who I have worked with closely will be a better person to give me a reco. Is that a negative in any way?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:14:38 PM)
We prefer that letters come from someone who supervised you directly. If you reported to this person unofficially, or on a project basis, it should be OK but it is not ideal.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 4:14:38 PM)
How do I highlight the fact that I filed many patents but, because they have not been published, I cannot share any further information regarding them?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:14:38 PM)
Max - that could be on your resume or Employment History section under job responsibilities.
rd (Feb 21, 2008 4:15:16 PM)
As a re-applicant from the full-time program, I have used the same responses from my full-time application for some questions - the goals essay as they have not changed and the innovation/creativity essay. Is that ok?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:15:16 PM)
Hi rd. If the information is still relevant, you can use the same essay answers. Some of the questions in the EWMBA application are different from the Full-time MBA application, please make sure to address them in your EWMBA application.
Rob_Z (Feb 21, 2008 4:15:21 PM)
Can you switch (once enrolled) between full and part time?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:15:21 PM)
There is a transfer policy, but space is very limited and there is only one opportunity (after the first year) to apply to transfer.
wb (Feb 21, 2008 4:17:05 PM)
I got my undergraduate degree from China. I have the degree certificate with me but when I asked for the transcript I did not ask for a copy of certificate from school record office. Can I provide Haas with a copy of my certificate? Or have it notarized?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:17:05 PM)
Hi WB. Yes, you can submit a photocopy of your degree certificate for evaluation purposes. If you are admitted, we can then certify the copy against your original. Please remember to send your transcripts and the degree certificate both in English and Chinese.
Ali_S (Feb 21, 2008 4:17:37 PM)
On retaking GMAT, with a 660 GMAT, if I am considering retaking it but have run out of time prior to deadline, do I need to notify you ahead of time, or only when I am certain that I will retake it? And how does it fair if I retake it (with justification and notification to you)
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:17:37 PM)
That's fine, but there is no guarantee we can consider a late GMAT score. The earlier we receive your late score, the better the chance it will be considered. Please indicate a "future GMAT test date" in the "tests" section of the application so that we know to expect a late score. In addition to having the official test score sent through the testing center, please also fax or email us your score immediately after taking the test.
san (Feb 21, 2008 4:18:26 PM)
What's is the chance if someone has 580 in GMAT?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:18:26 PM)
Hi San. 580 is below the range of scores we usually see for admitted students (640 to mid 700s), so it would put you at a significant disadvantage.
DJ (Feb 21, 2008 4:18:31 PM)
Given all other stats are similar, what differentiates a successful application from a rejected one?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:18:31 PM)
DJ - a tough question. We look at each person individually to determine what they would add to the class.
frank (Feb 21, 2008 4:18:36 PM)
I applied same Berkley EWMBA program 4 years ago. I was on waiting list however not accepted in the end. Does admission office still have my records, like transcripts, score, essay etc? I'm wondering could I refer to previous record if possible and I couldn't get my previous college sent the transcript on time.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:18:36 PM)
Hi Frank, we no longer have your application or transcripts from 4 years ago. We only save materials for 2 years.
ZH (Feb 21, 2008 4:19:29 PM)
I got 37 (82 percentile) on GMAT Verbal, 6.0 AWA. How do you view this score given English is not my first language?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:19:29 PM)
We will look at your score and your essays and short answer questions. Solid communication skills are important for this program.
MBA08 (Feb 21, 2008 4:19:55 PM)
Are part-time students allowed to join student clubs of the full-time MBA program like consulting club, finance club, etc.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:19:55 PM)
Absolutely, yes! The president of the finance club is an EW student.
MBA08 (Feb 21, 2008 4:20:10 PM)
Would candidates who are current supervisors have an edge over those who do not have management experience?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:20:10 PM)
It depends on the experience and the overall application.
ZH (Feb 21, 2008 4:20:56 PM)
Isn't the Executive MBA deadline past? Is there a point of checking the Executive MBA box on the application?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:20:56 PM)
Hi ZH. Yes, the deadline for the Executive MBA program has passed, but the BCEMBA interest box is not tied to the deadline. It doesn't hurt to check off the box, if you are interested in the Executive MBA program as well.
Applicant7655 (Feb 21, 2008 4:21:44 PM)
Hi. I am graduated from an institution outside the US, however, I took some courses at the City College of San Francisco and UC Berkeley Extension. Do I need to send transcripts for each course taken? If so, can those institutions directly address the transcripts to you? Sorry, I am not very familiar with this process.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:21:44 PM)
If the courses you took are relevant to the MBA you can include them. But you do not have to include transcripts for classes that were not applied towards a degree. Official transcripts can be sent to our office directly, or collected by the applicant and sent in one package (preferred).

What is the significance of the salary information requested in the application form?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:22:18 PM)
H iDC, it is one of many data points we use to help understand your career progression and level of responsibility.
Max (Feb 21, 2008 4:22:26 PM)
In the Employment History section, do I have to fill out a different form for every promotion I received, whether it was with or without a pay increase? Also for every form then, do I have to indicate the sales annual revenue from that particular period ?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:22:26 PM)
Yes, the more information we have the better. Thanks!
SCLee (Feb 21, 2008 4:23:49 PM)
Regarding statistics class prerequisite, how can I prove that I studied statistics? The only option is to take waiver exam? FYI, I received BS and MS in foreign university and earned a PhD in Mechanical engineering in the US.
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:23:49 PM)
You may take either the waiver exam, or a basic statistics class within the last five years. We do not consider coursework older than 5 years. Details are provided here: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/req.html#prereq

Where is the tab for short-term and long term goal. I could not find it in the application.
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:23:51 PM)
The goals question is number 1 of the Short Answer questions.

Hi, I have already submitted by recommendation letters - one from my direct supervisor and the other from college assuming it would cover both ends - working with boss and working in a team. Is that fine or do I need to get another letter? If so, how would I have to do it since I have already submitted my reco letters
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:25:04 PM)
Hi Samba, we only want you to submit two letters of recommendation.
DJ (Feb 21, 2008 4:26:13 PM)
The company that I had worked for before has since been acquired and is now known by a different name. Which one should I use?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:26:13 PM)

Hi, is there any guideline to the length of recommendation letter - a recommender asked me about it.
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:26:37 PM)
The Admissions Committee likes to see specifics and details.
caridei (Feb 21, 2008 4:27:02 PM)
Can you provide your biggest pet peeves observed in rejected applications? What are the non-obvious application killers?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:27:02 PM)
Proofread! Typos, bad grammar or incorrect spelling can really hurt your application. Take the application seriously and do your best, this comes through.
sj_cal (Feb 21, 2008 4:27:30 PM)
Are the essays read in order? And for a reapplicant are they read after rereading last year's essay?
admissions_molly (Feb 21, 2008 4:27:30 PM)
We read the entire application and we'll look at last year's information too.
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 21, 2008 4:28:49 PM)

Hi I am from INDIA and have resided in the US for almost 8 years, do I still have to take TOEFL?
Admissions_Aija (Feb 21, 2008 4:28:51 PM)
If your undergraduate degree is from India and you do not have at least one year of Masters level studies in the US, you would need to take the TOEFL. If you are uncertain whether you need to take the TOEFL, please give us a call. TOEFL dates are currently very limited in the Bay Area, so please contact us soon.

The statistics course offered by UCSC has two parts. I have completed the first one but because the second course was not offered this year I was not able to complete it. Is there a way in which I can ask for extra time to finish the second part when it is offered?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:30:03 PM)
Pearl, in order to meet the statistics prerequisite through UC extension you MUST complete both courses prior to enrollment (August 8, 2008 for fall 2008). We do NOT grant extensions for the prerequisites. You may want to take the waiver exam instead, or a class from another school on our list.

Is it ok to go over the word limit for the essays, say like 5%?
Admissions_Beth (Feb 21, 2008 4:30:51 PM)
Hi MBA08, please try to stay within the word limits. +/- 10 to 15 words is OK, but we really discourage longer essays.
