Sarah Thompson– Admissions Assistant
Admissions_Sarah (Nov 7, 2007 2:54:28 PM)
Welcome to the Berkeley Evening & Weekend MBA chat. My name is Sarah and I will be moderating the chat today. I would like to introduce Molly Kihanya, Associate Director of Admissions, Aija Gamburg, Program Coordinator, and Beth Hoch, Assistant Director.
This chat is moderated. Your questions are put into a cue to be answered, so do not be alarmed if we do not respond to you immediately. It is best if you send one question at a time and please do not resend your questions multiple times. They will not be answered more quickly and it may slow us down. Please send us your questions!
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 2:53:55 PM)
Welcome!
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 2:55:14 PM)
Hello everyone, and welcome!
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 2:56:06 PM)
Welcome!
Asad (Nov 7, 2007 2:56:21 PM)
My question is about the interview. I understand that the interviewer would not have read my essays at the time of the interview. Would the interviewer eventually read my essays? Or would my essays be read by a different person altogether.
I am trying to gauge how much of the interview would be (should be?) devoted to the content of the essays. My take is that at some level, the interviewer would like to assess the accuracy of the content of the essays.
If you could please elaborate on the details, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks ...
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 2:56:21 PM)
The interviewer will be one of two to four people on the admissions committee that will read your entire application after the interview.
p_mba (Nov 7, 2007 2:56:27 PM)
I'm an international student, I have the transcript from my junior college. The transcript contains all the information in English, however it is on a college letterhead which is Non-English. The transcript has college stamp at the bottom in English, it is in an envelope having the college name and seal both in English. Will this work?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 2:56:27 PM)
Hi! That should be fine. Please send in your transcript, and if anything more is needed, we will let you know and give you time to send it in.
danny (Nov 7, 2007 2:56:51 PM)
If I enroll as a part-time MBA now, can I change to full-time MBA later (say 1 year later), in case I were fired by the current company?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 2:56:51 PM)
It is possible to apply for transfer after the first year, however the number of students transferring every year is very small.
Asad (Nov 7, 2007 2:57:18 PM)

admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 2:57:18 PM)
Please prepare for the interview like a job interview. We will ask questions about your background as well as your goals.
AsadB (Nov 7, 2007 2:58:16 PM)
How do you determine when classes are held in Santa Clara and when they are held on the Berkeley campus? How far ahead will we know where classes are being held?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 2:58:16 PM)
Saturday classes only alternate between Berkeley and Santa Clara. The schedule is set far in advance of the start of the semester and posted online.
CHUMIN (Nov 7, 2007 2:59:07 PM)
I'm still taking the prerequisite math class and it's going to end this December. Do I need to send the grade information when I hand in application?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 2:59:07 PM)
No. You can enter the course you are taking in the application (prerequisite question) and apply before completing the course. Once you receive your grade, please send us an official transcript for the course.
Gerry (Nov 7, 2007 2:59:12 PM)
I am just an engineer, will that affect my application in a negative way? Say another person who has already been promoted to manager, he will have better chance than me?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 2:59:12 PM)
It is critical that every person who applies (no matter what their job function) provide clear information about accomplishments and leadership experience. Some people have leadership experience without having the official title of manager - so it depends on your application and your experience.
stephen (Nov 7, 2007 2:59:58 PM)
I was wondering if there is a way to switch between the evening and the weekend.
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 2:59:58 PM)
For your first year of core classes, you are in either an evening (M/W or T/TH) cohort or a weekend (Saturday) cohort. For the second two years of electives you can move around, taking electives in all schedules: Monday-Thursday, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.
Arti (Nov 7, 2007 3:00:41 PM)
I would like to know if I have a MS, do I have to give MS transcripts or undergrad transcripts?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:00:41 PM)
We need one copy of each of your transcripts: undergraduate and any masters degrees as well.
nubi (Nov 7, 2007 3:00:49 PM)
In the application essays there is question about intermediate and long-term goals. What is the time frame of intermediate and long-term? i.e. intermediate being in the next 5 years, etc
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:00:49 PM)
Please use your best judgment.
danny (Nov 7, 2007 3:00:58 PM)
I know Berkeley takes about 300 part-time students each year, how many could transfer to full-time MBA after one year? Say 10 or 30 or how many, just an idea?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:00:58 PM)
Usually the number is somewhere between 0 and 5. You should apply to the program you are most interested in and that fits your schedule, because the transfer option is very limited.
nubi (Nov 7, 2007 3:01:04 PM)
All my degrees are from one university. Can I just send one copy of the transcript?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:01:04 PM)
As long as all the courses and degrees show up on the transcript, one copy is fine.
Gerry (Nov 7, 2007 3:01:39 PM)
How many applicants in year 2006? How many admitted?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:01:39 PM)
We had 843 applicants apply in 2006 for fall 2007. We admitted a class of 243.
RearingToGo (Nov 7, 2007 3:01:45 PM)
I am an international student and I have the original transcripts from my college that were issued to me when I graduated but they are not willing to issue another copy in an envelope with a seal on it. Will the ones I have do?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:01:45 PM)
You can send a copy when you submit your application. We will need to see the original transcript for our Graduate Division if you are admitted.
Kyle (Nov 7, 2007 3:03:00 PM)
Hello, I'm curious about the work experience/history section of the application. I'm entering in similar, and in some cases identical, descriptions as to what is on my resume. Is that acceptable?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:03:00 PM)
That's fine. Please remember to enter a separate record for each position, even if they are in the same company.
Arti (Nov 7, 2007 3:03:20 PM)
I have given 2 recommender's names online, can I change one of them and give someone else?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:03:20 PM)
Yes. To make a change to your recommenders names and/or contact information, you must contact our office by phone or email.
CHUMIN (Nov 7, 2007 3:03:42 PM)
I have all the documents to hand in, is there a due date to mail to the office? What address do I need to send it?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:03:42 PM)
All extra materials, including transcripts must be postmarked by the deadline date. Please see the application instructions for the address.
Nitin (Nov 7, 2007 3:04:18 PM)
Do part-time students have the same access to recruiters as the full time students?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:04:18 PM)
Yes, Evening & Weekend students can participate in On-Campus Recruiting.
Nitin (Nov 7, 2007 3:04:45 PM)
What kind of internship prospects are there for FT students? What are placement percentages from past years?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:04:45 PM)
[This chat is for applicants to the part-time program (EWMBA).] Both full-time and EWMBA students can participate in on-campus recruiting for internships. The caveat is that you are required to quit your job in order to accept an internship.
BBB (Nov 7, 2007 3:05:15 PM)
My question is about the essay questions. Are this current years application essays going to be the same as next year? I do not plan on applying until next year but, I do want to prepare myself for it.
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:05:15 PM)
We make adjustments to the essay questions every year, and have not yet finalized the essay questions for next year. We will publish the new questions on our website over the summer.
Pallavim (Nov 7, 2007 3:05:58 PM)
In the main essays, do we need to write about educational performance? For example, I did my master's last year, do I have to write about how I performed there or about some bad performances? Should I talk about my high school hobbies and educational activities?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:05:58 PM)
In the main essay and short answer questions we want to learn more about you. We would like to get to know you through these questions. I recommend that you look at the essays as a way for us to understand more about you as a person.
p_mba (Nov 7, 2007 3:06:26 PM)
What is the tolerance level on word limit for essays? Is 5% over word limit is acceptable?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:06:26 PM)
Only about 10-15 words over the limit is acceptable, but we appreciate when applicants follow the instructions in the application and stick to the word limits.
stephen (Nov 7, 2007 3:06:28 PM)
I am planning to apply for the second round. Is there a difference my chances of being accepted vs the first round. Would you recommend waiting until next year.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:06:28 PM)
No, the acceptance rate is the same. Please feel free to apply in Round 2!
Eric (Nov 7, 2007 3:06:48 PM)
My question is, do I need to submit an original letter from recommender for my recommendation letter or a copy is good? Or there is a online form for my recommender to fill in?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:06:48 PM)
There is an on-line form for recommenders.
javahw (Nov 7, 2007 3:07:01 PM)
Hi, I got PhD degree in US, should I send transcript all including graduate school?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:07:01 PM)
Yes, we require you submit one transcript from each of your degrees.
AsadB (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:00 PM)
What % of students take more than 3 years to complete their degree?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:00 PM)
I don't have the exact percentage, but it is a small number. The vast majority of students finish in three years, and a few even finish in 2.5. You have a maximum of 7 years to complete the degree.
sg (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:06 PM)
Hi, I am sukirti, I want to know about scholarships offered in this program if one is not US citizen.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:06 PM)
Unfortunately, we offer only limited scholarships for continuing students. For more information, please go to http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/EWMBA/finaid/index.html.
Ella (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:26 PM)
Should supplemental materials be sent by certified mail?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:26 PM)
You can send it by regular mail if you wish. It's your choice.
Toni (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:55 PM)
What are the admissions requirements - GMAT score, work experience, GPA?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:08:55 PM)
We require the GMAT, two letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and several essay and short answer questions on our online application. We also require two prerequisites, in math and statistics, as requirements for enrollment. The average work experience is about 8 years, and the average GPA about 3.0.
sangdil (Nov 7, 2007 3:09:45 PM)
The online application suggests that online recommendations are preferred over mail. How long of a delay in the process is possible if I my recommender(s) chose to submit the letter by mail?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:09:45 PM)
If your recommender wants to submit the recommendation by mail, it is due by the deadline date - the same as the online recommendation. There will be no delay when the recommendation is submitted by the deadline date.
nubi (Nov 7, 2007 3:10:12 PM)
In the application, there is a question that asks for the number of employees who report to you? Can this include people who do not work at the company?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:10:12 PM)
No. We are interested in the number of full-time direct reports formally in your company. You can explain any contractors, etc., that report to you in the 'Responsibilities' field.
Yuliya Levites (Nov 7, 2007 3:10:38 PM)
One more question about the photocopy of my diploma. Is it ok if I make it myself without the help of a notary?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:10:38 PM)
You can make a copy yourself and send it in. If you are admitted our Graduate Division will need to see the original.
AsadB (Nov 7, 2007 3:10:57 PM)
How many EWMBA students took an internship this year?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:10:57 PM)
24 internships last summer by EWMBA students.
Abdul (Nov 7, 2007 3:12:01 PM)
I have an engineering degree from the University of Toronto, do you need a copy from my degree or is the transcript enough?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:12:01 PM)
It depends on the country and your transcript. If your transcript shows the degree conferred and the conferral date, you do not need to submit the degree certificate.
bev (Nov 7, 2007 3:12:22 PM)
Can you talk a bit about the Grant Award, in particular, how many students received the award and what the average award amount was.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:12:22 PM)
The EWMBA Grant is available for those in the non-profit or public sector. It is for new and continuing students. We have several students who receive the award each year.
Yuliya Levites (Nov 7, 2007 3:12:28 PM)
Question about transcripts. I graduated from the university in Moscow, Russia. As a result I do not have transcripts, I have my diploma. As I understand it is enough to send to you for now: a photocopy of diploma and translated version. But my translated version was done in Russia and it has Russian stamps from the translator. Is it ok? Or do I need to retranslate my diploma in US?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:12:28 PM)
We require certifications by an ATA certified translator, see the application instructions for details. You can send in what you have now to meet the deadline, and we will let you know if we require anything more.
JohnR 2547 (Nov 7, 2007 3:14:00 PM)
What are the differences between the evening and weekend program versus the full time in regards to class content? Is there a study abroad program involving international business? Why should I choose Berkeley over UCLA?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:14:00 PM)
The EWMBA is the same Berkeley MBA but just a different schedule option. The EWMBA offers a Seminar in International Business. Last year we had 5 trips to places such as China, South Africa and Chile.
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:15:38 PM)
The career services for EWMBA students at Haas are truly exceptional! We are very proud to have a fully dedicated staff and access to on-campus recruiting for full-time positions and internships. You can participate in workshops, one on one coaching, industry panels, assessment tools, the experienced hire resume database, and more. We make sure to schedule activities on nights and weekends. We have a podcast on our website that explains our career service offerings: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/haas/podcast/audio/haas_ewmba_career1.mp3
javahw (Nov 7, 2007 3:15:57 PM)
I got an advanced degree in US. Should I send all transcript including BS, MS, PhD?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:15:57 PM)
Yes please.
stephen (Nov 7, 2007 3:15:59 PM)
I am originally from Belgium. I went to college there and completed a part of my Architecture degree, equivalent to an associates degree (I did receive a diploma). I went to Cornell after that and transferred 29 credits to complete a BS in Structural Engineering. Is it enough to send in the transcripts from Cornell or do I need to get you the transcripts from Belgium. Also do I need to retake a TOEFL.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:15:59 PM)
We will need to see your transcript from both institutions. I need to check on the TOEFL question, please email me directly at mkihanya@haas.berkeley.edu.
p_mba (Nov 7, 2007 3:16:54 PM)
For Goals essay, the question does not ask about why MBA and Why Haas? Is it ok if I mention that in the answer, or should I use optional essay to elaborate on that?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:16:54 PM)
Please use your best judgment and answer the questions as asked.
Ella (Nov 7, 2007 3:17:21 PM)
I am about to submit my application, but I get a message that I need to enter an optional essay on top of three required, is this correct?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:17:21 PM)
The optional essay should be optional. Please call our office after the chat and we will assist you.
Arti (Nov 7, 2007 3:18:03 PM)
Hi, could you please tell me when should we take Stats prerequisite course and does Berkeley have one online which we can register?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:18:03 PM)
The prerequisite courses are not an admissions requirement, so you do not need to complete them before applying, but before you enroll (by August 8, 2008). UC Berkeley Extension has a course that we accept. For more information about pre-approved courses, please see: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/PrereqClassList.pdf
claire (Nov 7, 2007 3:18:10 PM)
If I am unsure right now which program is right for me, will I be penalized for applying to both the full time and the part time programs?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:18:10 PM)
You are only allowed to apply to ONE program at Berkeley at a time. The online application will prevent you from submitting a second application.
AsadB (Nov 7, 2007 3:18:34 PM)
I read somewhere that the cost of the Berkeley EWMBA will rise 15% every year for the next few years is that true? Can you speak a bit about the change in the cost of the tuition?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:18:34 PM)
The EWMBA program fees to increase every year. However, I believe that you were reading about the full-time program that will increase at a larger percent than the EWMBA program. Our fees increase yearly less than 10%.
Sami (Nov 7, 2007 3:19:04 PM)
My undergrad school is overseas and they provide 2 official forms of transcripts, one in Arabic and one in English. Both are official versions directly from the school and are not an external translation. Also they don't provide it in a closed envelope, they only hand it to the student or parents/guardian. Can I just submit the English version with my documents as it is? Do you need the other Arabic version as well? Does it have to be in envelope from school?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:19:04 PM)
Please submit both the official Arabic and Official English copies. You should be all set, but if we need anything more after reviewing your transcripts, we will let you know.
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:19:28 PM)
We will consider your highest GMAT score, if taken more than once.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:19:35 PM)
Your first year you will have to choose the evening or weekend option. Your second and third years you can create your own schedule with the various electives you choose.
cont_halt (Nov 7, 2007 3:19:50 PM)
I had applied to full-time program in 2005. Do I have to apply as a re-applicant?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:19:50 PM)
No, you will apply as a regular applicant. We keep application materials for two years, so if you applied in 2005, we no longer have any of your materials on file.
Abdul (Nov 7, 2007 3:20:10 PM)
I started an online MBA this January and I am almost 70% done with a GPA of 4.0. Is this a plus or a minus on my application?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:20:10 PM)
Good grades in masters-level courses would be a positive addition to the academic portion of your application.
RearingToGo (Nov 7, 2007 3:20:21 PM)
I have people who report to me in the sense that I am responsible for their work allocation but I do not do their formal review. Do they qualify as my reports?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:20:21 PM)
No. But you can discuss your responsibilities on your resume and in the Employment History section of the application.
Yuliya Levites (Nov 7, 2007 3:20:51 PM)
Referral letters by mail: Can I send them myself once I got envelopes from my recommenders?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:20:51 PM)
You can but their signature must be over the flap of the envelope.
Alina (Nov 7, 2007 3:22:04 PM)
What do you weigh more - gpa or gmat?
I read somewhere that you don't even consider an applicant with a GPA less than 3.0 - is that true?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:22:04 PM)
We look at your application holistically. We will look at your overall academic performance and take both the gpa and gmat into account. We do take people with less than a 3.0.
BBB (Nov 7, 2007 3:22:13 PM)
Is there a difference in having an MBA or an executive MBA?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:22:13 PM)
The degree itself is the same Berkeley MBA degree, however the program structure and application requirements vary. Please see our website for more information about both programs, and I encourage you to come to an information session for both programs, if you are unsure about which one would be right for you.
cont_halt (Nov 7, 2007 3:22:44 PM)
Does one have to satisfy pre-requisites before applying? Is it possible to wait for admission and then take the waiver test or attend a class?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:22:45 PM)
The prerequisites (math and statistics) are required for enrollment, not admission. If you apply round 1, there is time to take a class or waiver exam after you hear the decision. If you apply round 2, I recommend starting a class in the spring. Also, waiver exams are only offered through May. This is because not all summer classes end in time and they also fill up fast! Each year, at least one admitted student cannot enroll because they are unable to fulfill the prerequisites. Plan ahead!
stephen (Nov 7, 2007 3:23:13 PM)
I am a full time employee for a structural engineering firm in Palo Alto. I started my own business about 2 years ago, with the potential of leaving my day job within the next 6 months. When applying should my current position be my full-time job, or my side work.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:23:13 PM)
I would list the firm as your current position but make sure you provide details about your business too.
p_mba (Nov 7, 2007 3:23:27 PM)
For Innovation and Creativity essay, do you expect to give one example or two? What kind of innovation and creativity you are looking for?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:23:27 PM)
Please use your best judgment.
Kyle (Nov 7, 2007 3:23:34 PM)
Okay, thank you. Another question: Can I assume that each of my application reviewers will be looking at my entire application or should each essay need to stand alone (as far as companies being referred to and so forth)?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:23:34 PM)
The essays will always be read together.
mba_jt (Nov 7, 2007 3:24:08 PM)
How much does GMAT score weigh in admission selection? Is score of 600 good enough?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:24:08 PM)
We do not have any particular percentage of weight on any one part of the application, but rather look at the materials as one complete package. The usual range of GMAT is somewhere in the 620s to mid 700s.
Sami (Nov 7, 2007 3:24:23 PM)
Can one hand in the required extra documents at the UCB campus directly rather than mailing them?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:24:23 PM)
Yes, you can bring your documents to the Haas School of Business reception desk directly Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm.
bev (Nov 7, 2007 3:25:07 PM)
I am looking to strengthen the academic aptitude portion of the application, is there greater weight in taking a math/stats class vs. a financial accounting class prior to applying?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:25:07 PM)
I recommend taking math and/or statistics first, since you will need to take them anyway to meet the prerequisites.
cont_halt (Nov 7, 2007 3:26:10 PM)
What is the typical acceptance rate?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:26:10 PM)
Last year we received 843 applications, and we admit 240 students every year.
bev (Nov 7, 2007 3:26:14 PM)
Do you have any stats on PT students that change careers after their MBA or move to a new geographic location? My concern is that this will be difficult given the time/workload.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:26:14 PM)
I don't have official statistics but more and more students are interested in changing careers. It is challenging to do this and the students spend a lot of time outside of class and work to make it happen.
Pallavim (Nov 7, 2007 3:26:31 PM)
After the admission process is over, do you get feedback for your application, essays and interview (especially when you were not admitted)? So that you can work on those gaps and re-apply?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:26:31 PM)
Feedback is only offered to applicants who were on the waiting list. Unfortunately, the volume of applicants is just too great to allow us to accommodate all requests for feedback.
nubi (Nov 7, 2007 3:27:36 PM)
are there students who move to CA from another state or country to attend the evening program?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:27:36 PM)
Yes! We have students who have moved from NY, WA, OR, and even India; and students who commute from LA, Portland and Seattle.
stephen (Nov 7, 2007 3:27:39 PM)
Do you need to pick the evening or weekend when you apply. If yes, can you change you mind before classes start.

How many people apply for part-time MBA each year? How many are offered admission?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:28:01 PM)
Last year 843 applied. 243 enrolled for the Fall.
javahw (Nov 7, 2007 3:28:22 PM)
For next round, when is the last date to take GMAT? What is minimum score to admit? Is verbal or quantitative important?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:28:22 PM)
If you are applying for February 29 deadline, you can take the GMAT up until that day. However, you cannot submit your application without a GMAT score. We do not have a minimum GMAT score, but the range is usually somewhere in the 620s to mid 700s. Ideally we look for a balance between the verbal and quantitative score.
new_one (Nov 7, 2007 3:29:31 PM)
I have a BS from India and the GPA is on a different scale and also not very good. However I have a MS from US and GPA of 3.9 and a GMAT of 710. Would the undergrad GPA hurt my admission chances.
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:29:31 PM)
We are very familiar with international transcripts. We'll look at your academic performance along with the rest of your application.
mba_jt (Nov 7, 2007 3:29:39 PM)
How much does a GMAT score weigh in the admission selection? If it is lower than 650, do I still have a chance?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:29:39 PM)
The GMAT score hold no specific weight, and there is no set minimum cutoff. The median score for admitted students last year was 700, with 80% of admits scoring between 640 and 760. Your chances of admission depend on a combination of academics, professional accomplishments, managerial potential and personal qualities.
Yuliya Levites (Nov 7, 2007 3:30:10 PM)
Do you accept people with failing grades in the past, but still with high current GPA?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:30:11 PM)
We look at each situation on a case by case basis.
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:30:14 PM)
You do need to take the GMAT before submitting your application, so for the first deadline you need to take the GMAT by 11/15.
Yuliya Levites (Nov 7, 2007 3:31:26 PM)
Transcripts: you require certification or just translation would be enough?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:31:26 PM)
We require official transcripts and official translations of International transcripts, but will accept photocopies temporarily. Please refer to the application instructions for details, and feel free to call or email us after the chat if you have questions about your specific country or school.

I was recently informed that PT students have the option of going FT at the end of the first year. Is this true? If so, what is the transition like?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:31:29 PM)
Yes but it is very difficult to do. Generally, there is limited space and you must go through an approval process.
Yuliya Levites (Nov 7, 2007 3:32:20 PM)
We will get the answer if we are accepted to Berkeley only on March 14th? Is there any chance to get feedback earlier?

Yes, we notify everyone on March 14th for Round 1.

Is it possible to complete EWMBA within a year?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:32:48 PM)
No. The program is structured to be completed in 3 years, however you can complete it in 5 semesters.
Kathy (Nov 7, 2007 3:33:01 PM)
I understand the length of the part-time program is 3 years. Is it possible to get the degree in 4 or 5 years in case of something unexpected happens, i.e., working abroad for 6 months?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:33:01 PM)
Yes but exceptions are made on a case by case basis.

I'm considering attending an admissions event, what will I learn there vs. your website? Why would it be advantageous to attend?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:33:46 PM)
The information sessions expand on the information given on the website. It also gives you the opportunity to meet and ask questions of admissions staff and current students who will share their perspectives.

I'm not in a managerial position, what should I emphasize on in essays, application and interview? How should I prepare for the admission process? Does not being in managerial or leadership position reduce my chances of admission?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:35:41 PM)
Management and leadership experience is not required for admission. But we are looking for career progression, significant accomplishments, and leadership potential. Emphasize what you would add to the classroom or to a team project. What would your classmates learn from you?
p_mba (Nov 7, 2007 3:35:47 PM)
After submitting the application, if there are any updates e.g. promotion, how can I provide that update to admission committee?

Hi, I graduated cum laude from Boston University and have been working full time in marketing for the last 8 years. I am confident about my recommendations and my essays/work history, however my GMAT score was 610. How will this hurt my application? (I do plan to try to get the score up by taking the test again - will taking the test several times hurt me?)
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:37:48 PM)
Last year 80% of our classes scored between 640 - 760 on their GMAT. You are welcome to take the GMAT again. We will take your highest score. Taking the GMAT several times will not hurt you.
javahw (Nov 7, 2007 3:38:00 PM)
If I travel and miss number of classes, then is it possible to make up? Or do you require mandatory attendance?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:38:00 PM)
Class participation is important, but we understand that many of our students have to travel occasionally for work. We offer videotaping of classes available online so you can keep up while you are away.

How can you reflect the promotions you got in the same company in the Employment history section of the application?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:38:51 PM)
Our instructions indicate that you should complete a section for each job change or title that you have.
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:39:42 PM)
You cannot apply to both full-time and part-time programs at the same time. If you apply to full-time one year and then part-time the next, you should simply explain why in your essays.
AsadB (Nov 7, 2007 3:40:49 PM)
I have a low GPA 2.9 and worked hard to get a 740 on my GMAT, is that enough to offset my low GPA or should I try to get a higher score?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:40:49 PM)
We look at all of the application materials as a complete package, and you can make up for a lower GPA by doing well in the GMAT, having strong letters of recommendation, and great essays. The range of GMAT for admitted students is usually somewhere in the 620s to mid 700s.
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:41:01 PM)
Feedback is offered to applicants who were on the waiting list only. Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications we receive, we cannot accommodate all requests for feedback.

Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:42:00 PM)

How do you support building a strong network in an evening program?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:42:08 PM)
We have 45 minute breaks when you can do team work, meet with faculty, attend a workshop, visit career services, or attend other events. We also have the EWMBA Association. EW students are invited to local Alumni events where they can meet alumni and people from other programs.
Yuliya Levites (Nov 7, 2007 3:43:19 PM)
What is the Toefl score required? Your website states 570(CBT) and 68(iBT). But Toefl web site declares that 570 is equivalent to 88 for iBT. What is correct?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:43:19 PM)
The average iBT TOEFL score for our 2010 class was 114. The minimum is 68. We don't really see any CBT test takers these days.

Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:44:41 PM)
The letters are still accepted after the deadline, but we will not be able to review your application until it is complete, so you should encourage your recommender to write the letter as soon as possible.

The question about Supplementary data: do you expect short answers? Or is it better to write the story as detailed as possible?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:44:54 PM)
Please use your best judgment. Supplementary data questions do have a suggested word limit of 350 words.
Kyle (Nov 7, 2007 3:45:19 PM)
You mention that all of the essays will be read together, but how about the other parts of the application like the resume and work experience/history section?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:45:19 PM)
The entire application is read thoroughly by at least two people.

Can you be accepted for admission, just not able to start classes until pre-requisites are met?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:46:23 PM)
Offers of admission for fall 2008 are contingent upon the applicant completing both prerequisites prior to August 8, 2008 (Orientation). Deferrals are not given.

English is not my first language. I am worried about my verbal GMAT score. Do you take that into consideration? Do you look at the verbal and the math separately?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:48:08 PM)
Yes, we do look at each section of the GMAT closely. The verbal section and AWA score is important if English is not your first language. You will also demonstrate your writing and speaking abilities in the application essays and interview.
apagle (Nov 7, 2007 3:48:29 PM)
I have selected two recommenders, but just read in a response that you'd like for one of them to be a current supervisor, one of my recommenders was that person, but has since been promoted to another team, can I remove them and add my current supervisor?
admissions_molly (Nov 7, 2007 3:48:29 PM)
You can but if the person was your direct supervisor for a long time, you may still want them to fill out the recommendation. If your new boss knows you really well, you could choose that person.
gbs16 (Nov 7, 2007 3:48:46 PM)
Are the faculty teaching in the evening and weekend program the same as the regular MBA program?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:48:46 PM)
Yes! In fact, about 50% of the EWMBA electives are cross-listed with the full-time program, so the class is half full-time and half part-time students.
Mike A (Nov 7, 2007 3:49:58 PM)
I graduated 3 years ago with BS EE with GPA 3.0 and I have 2 years experience as a project manager, I haven't taken the GMAT yet, what are my chances if I want to go for MBA?
Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:49:58 PM)
The average work experience in the Evening & Weekend MBA program is about 8 years, so you may want to wait a couple of years before applying to be competitive in the applicant pool.

Admissions_Aija (Nov 7, 2007 3:54:52 PM)
Seventeen years of work experience and a prior Masters degree would certainly not be negative. We look at the application as a complete package where all pieces are important to form a comprehensive picture of the applicant.

How important are the essays in the application?
Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:55:13 PM)
Very important! The essays are where you can tell us about YOU, outside of academics and work experience. We want to know about you personally, so be honest and forthright.

Admissions_Beth (Nov 7, 2007 3:56:20 PM)
I recommend waiting until all elements of your application are complete. We offer an extension on the TOEFL only, so if you want your future GMAT score to count, you need to wait until round 2.
