Sarah Thompson– Admissions Assistant

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 2:54:03 PM)
Welcome to the Berkeley Evening & Weekend MBA chat. My name is Sarah and I will be moderating the chat today. I would like to introduce Molly Kihanya, Associate Director of Admissions, Aija Gamburg, Program Coordinator, and Beth Hoch, Assistant Director. This chat is moderated. Your questions are put into a cue to be answered, so do not be alarmed if we do not respond to you immediately. It is best if you send one question at a time and please do not resend your questions multiple times. They will not be answered more quickly and it may slow us down. Please send us your questions!

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 2:54:47 PM)
Welcome!

RS (Oct 24, 2007 2:54:51 PM)
Can someone attend the evening MBA program while being on a H1B visa from their current employer. No additional visa related paperwork required?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 2:54:51 PM)
Yes. That is correct.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 2:55:03 PM)
Welcome everyone!

Sessions (Oct 24, 2007 2:55:42 PM)
What is the average age of a EW student?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 2:55:42 PM)
The average age of an EW student is about 32 years.

rt (Oct 24, 2007 2:56:13 PM)
Is it okay to use a Haas senior (currently in 2nd year) to write an informal recommendation?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 2:56:13 PM)
Your recommendations should come from current or former supervisors. If the student had a supervisory role to you, then they could be a good choice for a recommendation.

Andy (Oct 24, 2007 2:56:40 PM)
Good day, what is your advice for potential candidates who live out of state and wish to enroll. Is this even an option?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 2:56:40 PM)
Good day. The Weekend or Saturday cohort is an option. We have students who travel here from various California cities and West Coast states to attend.

rt (Oct 24, 2007 2:56:47 PM)
Is it okay to use a Haas senior (currently in 2nd year) to write an informal recommendation?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 2:56:47 PM)
We do accept informal recommendations from students/alums via email.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 2:57:35 PM)
Hello everyone, and welcome!

Amit (Oct 24, 2007 2:57:47 PM)
Hi all, Thanks for taking time to answer our questions. I have two questions. 1 > I was a consultant at a company before joining the same company on a full-time basis doing the same job. In my resume I list this as one continuous employment and elaborate/split it up in the admissions form. Is this acceptable? 2 > Can full-time internships, done AFTER graduation, be considered towards overall employment duration?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 2:57:47 PM)
Hi Amit. 1. Please make the distinction in your resume and in your application under Employment History. 2. Yes, but please provide as much detail as possible.

Patrick (Oct 24, 2007 2:59:37 PM)
I applied for the Full-time Fall 2007 program. For the PT program do I need to answer all essays, essay #2 only or everything but essay #2?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 2:59:37 PM)
Please follow the detailed instructions for reapplicants in the application instructions. We require that you complete the reapplicant essay, and it is to your benefit to do all the essays in the EWMBA application since they are somewhat different from full-time.

Sebastian (Oct 24, 2007 2:59:44 PM)
What is required to complete the program within 5 semesters?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 2:59:44 PM)
You will simply have to take more the 2 electives per semester in your second year. Or you can take a summer course or the Seminar in International Business. The 5 semester option is utilized quite often by our students.

Zheng (Oct 24, 2007 2:59:54 PM)
If I am admitted into the part-time program, and one year later feel that I may not be able to handle my life balance and want to only focus on study, will it be possible to switch to the full-time program?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 2:59:54 PM)
After the first year in the EW program it may be possible to switch to the Full-time MBA program. However, you have to apply for transfer, and the admission is based on space availability. The number of students transferring each year is very limited.

RS (Oct 24, 2007 3:00:24 PM)
If a candidate is selected for interview, how much "heads up" is given to the candidate (1 week? 2 weeks?).

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:00:24 PM)
We usually like you to come to campus for the interview 1-2 weeks after receiving the invitation. But we can accommodate you if you are out of town.

AKR (Oct 24, 2007 3:00:32 PM)
How would you compare the Haas EWMBA to the Wharton West here in SF?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:00:32 PM)
They are different in many ways. I would suggest you research both and decide which one is the best fit for you.

Andy (Oct 24, 2007 3:01:32 PM)
Is the weekend cohort/saturday option mandatory? I live in Washington, do you have candidates from this region typically?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:01:32 PM)
You can take courses in the evenings or on Saturdays, or a combination of both (during the last two years of electives). We do have students commuting from Seattle and Redmond, WA.

MS (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:00 PM)
Among all the requirements in getting chosen (GMAT score, Application Essays, GPA), is the first focus on the GMAT score?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:00 PM)
We do not have any specific percentage of weight to any part of the application, but rather look at it holistically. Essentially there are three important parts to the application: your work experience, academic performance, and personal qualities.

David (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:11 PM)
Hello, this may be an odd question for the EWMBA, but here goes. I am currently completing my undergraduate degree, and I was wondering if it were possible to apply for the EWMBA program while still a senior rather than waiting until the following year. I have over 16 years of professional work experience, but decided to finish my formal education later in life.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:11 PM)
It's a good question. I will have to check with our Graduate Division. You are welcome to email me offline, mkihanya@haas.berkeley.edu.

Zheng (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:38 PM)
My GMAT score is 760, would you please tell me what my position may be in the candidate pool?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:38 PM)
Students entering the MBA program in fall 2007 had an average GMAT score of 700 (most scoring between 620-750) and an average GPA of 3.3. I cannot tell you your chances of admission on this data point alone. Academics, work experience and personal qualities are all major factors.

julie (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:41 PM)
Hi, I'm getting a recommendation from my boss and a senior person (who's not my supervisor but on the same level as my boss). I work with said senior person in great capacity. Is it ok to have him write me a recommendation?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:02:41 PM)
Yes, that is fine. As long as they can provide detailed and objective information in the recommendation.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:04:25 PM)
If you are admitted in round 1, you are 99% guaranteed to get your first choice cohort. The chance is about 90% in round 2.

Zheng (Oct 24, 2007 3:04:37 PM)
I did two years in database work in telecom company, one year data modeling in healthcare company, and just started my new job – quantitative analysis in finance group of oil/energy company. And all my works are quantitative work, data modeling work and algorithm implementation work, requiring advanced knowledge in data analysis, statistics and advanced mathematics. Will those diverse industries working background weaken my application?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:04:37 PM)
Zheng, It sounds like you have some interesting work experience. You can use your resume and the Employment History in your application to help the Admissions Committee understand how you have progressed in your career. Additionally, we welcome all industries and job functions.

Kishore (Oct 24, 2007 3:05:31 PM)
Where can I find more info on the admission criteria?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:05:31 PM)
Please see our website for more information on the admission requirements: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/apply.html I would also encourage you to sign up for one of our information sessions to learn more about the program from admissions staff and students.

abhi (Oct 24, 2007 3:05:58 PM)
How much does it cost for the part-time MBA?

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 3:05:58 PM)
The cost for the Evening & Weekend MBA program is approximately $2,049 per unit, with 42 units to the degree for a total of about $86,000 for the three-year program; including all course materials, books, and two academic retreats.

Sebastian (Oct 24, 2007 3:06:07 PM)
How important is the minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for admission?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:06:07 PM)
We have no strict minimum GPA. We also consider the rigor of your institution and major. The average GPA is 3.3.

amipul (Oct 24, 2007 3:06:28 PM)
Hi, does the job title matter for admissions? Would preference be given to one who has a job title that reflects more leadership responsibilities?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:06:28 PM)
Your job title is important to understand where you are in an organization. However, it is important to clearly outline your accomplishments with regard to leadership in your resume and the Employment History on your application.

dtc (Oct 24, 2007 3:06:46 PM)
Hello. How does the Job Responsibilities field of the application differ from the resume? What's the thinking behind asking both?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:06:46 PM)
We are looking for more detail on your accomplishments within each position listed in Employment History. Your resume should be a 1-2 page summary overview.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:07:21 PM)
The EWMBA program fees do not differ by residency. Fees are the same for all our students.

unardi (Oct 24, 2007 3:07:45 PM)
Hi. I need to know about tuition.

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 3:07:45 PM)
The cost for the Evening & Weekend MBA program is approximately $2,049 per unit, with 42 units to the degree for a total of about $86,000 for the three-year program; including all course materials, books, and two academic retreats.

MS (Oct 24, 2007 3:07:51 PM)
I'd like to get clarification on the evening/weekend MBA program. Can I just take all my courses during the weekend, or will it all be alternating with evening courses?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:07:51 PM)
When you apply you choose your preferred cohort - evening or weekend (which is Saturday). The first year all of your classes will be in that cohort. Your second and third year you can choose your electives and your schedule based on what works best for you.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:04 PM)
As an Evening & Weekend student you have access to all the resources of the Haas Career Services. You can participate in the On-Campus Recruiting, in-person counseling, any recruiting events, etc.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:10 PM)
As a reapplicant, show effort in the application - we recommend redoing as much of the application as is relevant. In the reapplicant essay, take care to highlight what has improved in your application.

Miguel (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:32 PM)
Can you tell more about the strength and weakness of the program?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:32 PM)
The Berkeley Evening & Weekend MBA program has consistently ranked number 5 in the country in the US News & World Reports ranking. The program offers the same MBA as our full-time program just in a schedule that is convenient for working professionals. It's a rigorous program.

Zheng (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:37 PM)
Will that be OK to ask my previous graduate school's advisor to write me a recommendation letter? He has known me for about 3 years and I worked for him as a RA.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:37 PM)
I would not recommend it. We ask for professional letters of recommendation.

MS (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:45 PM)
Would the cost per unit ($2049) remain the same for International Students?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:09:45 PM)
Yes.

amipul (Oct 24, 2007 3:10:10 PM)
If I apply for the part-time MBA (evening or weekend), is it mandatory that I work full-time? Can I work part-time or not work at all and attend part-time MBA?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:10:10 PM)
The majority of our admitted students work full-time.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:10:31 PM)
You are considered an international applicant if your undergraduate degree is from outside the US. The only area of the application this effects is the transcript requirements.

julie (Oct 24, 2007 3:10:37 PM)
I took a few courses from a community college, do I need to send in those transcripts even though I didn't earn a degree? (just a few classes that aren't even business related)

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:10:37 PM)
Yes, you should send transcripts from all schools you've attended, including community college.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:10:55 PM)
About 95% of all admitted students get their first choice cohort preference.

Jen (Oct 24, 2007 3:11:17 PM)
I have ~13 yrs of progressive work experience. Understanding that the average is 8-10 years, will this increase or hurt my chances of being admitted?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:11:17 PM)
It would help, if you show continued progression and increased responsibilities through your career.

Amit (Oct 24, 2007 3:12:31 PM)
My colleague got promoted 8-9 months back and is now lead in my group. Is it inappropriate to use her as a second recommender? (My supervisor will be my first recommender). I was considering her because she knows me very well and has been a lead to me for at least one project.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:12:31 PM)
You could use her as your second recommendation but I would urge you to think of a former direct supervisor or someone who has more experience working with you in a supervisory role.

ewmba_aspirant (Oct 24, 2007 3:12:33 PM)
Would the cost per unit remain the same throughout the 3 year course of study for EWMBA? Is the price locked at the time we enroll?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:12:33 PM)
There is typically an annual fee increase of 3 to 5%. The program will cost you about $86,000 total if you enroll in fall 2008.

Sebastian (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:05 PM)
Is it seen negative changing the employer when starting the MBA program? Since working in Germany, I cannot stay with my current employer, since the company is only based in Germany.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:05 PM)
That's fine!

GIC (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:07 PM)
During my undergrad, I spend a semester abroad, do I need to send transcripts from that school as well even if I didn't get a letter grade?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:07 PM)
If the courses you took are included in your undergrad transcript, you do not need to send a separate transcript. The transcript should include the name of the course, the units, the grade received, and the date/semester when the course was completed.

Monika (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:15 PM)
I understand that all offers will be made in batch form, the first of which will be on March 14, 2008. Are interview invitations handled in a similar manner?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:15 PM)
No, interviews are scheduled on a rolling basis as early as a week after you submit your application.

julie (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:56 PM)
Can I send academic transcripts to Haas directly, or do I need to put them together myself and send them in ONE envelope to Haas? (I will have a few transcripts)

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:13:56 PM)
If you have multiple transcripts, we prefer to receive them all in one envelope. (They should all be sealed individually.) But either way is accepted.

AKR (Oct 24, 2007 3:14:06 PM)
How should I provide work history / recommendation for a new position that I'm just starting this month? I'm assuming it is ok to have a letter of recommendation come from a previous supervisor with more of familiarity with me.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:14:06 PM)
Good question - just provide what you can for the new job. It's great that you have your previous supervisor providing a recommendation.

routine125 (Oct 24, 2007 3:15:27 PM)
I read that there is a commuter bus from the silicon valley to your campus...how/where does it work?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:15:27 PM)
If you are in the evening cohort, you can choose to either get a parking pass to park on campus, or to take a shuttle from the South Bay. Currently there are two shuttles, one from Mountain View, and one from Santa Clara.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:15:34 PM)
Because this is an Evening & Weekend program you are not required to get your employer's permission; however, most applicants need to discuss applying to the program in order to get the appropriate recommendation letters.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:16:01 PM)
We have some great new experiental learning opportunities here at Haas that EWMBA students are very active in. Haas@Work is a "live" case at a company (recently Hotwire and Cisco). And Peers@Haas is a leadership skills development program. Please find more details on our website under 'Leading Through Innovation'.

Rini (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:05 PM)
Hi, I am getting recommendations from my previous university professors. Do I need to get any recommendations from my previous employer?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:05 PM)
We discourage recommendations from professors or faculty. We suggest that your two letters of recommendation come from: 1. your current direct supervisor and 2. a former direct supervisor (preferably within the last 3-5 years.)

Jen (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:28 PM)
Under what circumstances would we be invited for an interview?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:28 PM)
An invitation to interview is a positive sign of interest from the admissions committee. We interview about 2/3 of our applicants.

abhi (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:33 PM)
Can we take some courses at a local community college and then transfer the credits to the part-time MBA?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:33 PM)
We do not accept any transfer credits to the program. You can, however, take your prerequisite courses (college-level Math and Statistics) in a local community college. Please see the list of approved courses on our website: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/PrereqClassList.pdf

Nellie (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:53 PM)
Where can I get the recommendation forms?

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:53 PM)
Recommendation forms can be accessed within the application at http://haas.berkeley.edu/EWMBA/apply.html

Walt (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:55 PM)
I am currently enrolled in the Berkeley Extension for the Personal Financial Planning Course. Can any of these courses be credited towards the MBA program?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:17:55 PM)
Unfortunately, no. But the experience can add to your application.

Will (Oct 24, 2007 3:18:06 PM)
Hi Admissions Committee, what is the percentage of the applicants who are invited to the interview for each Round 1 and Round 2?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:18:06 PM)
Hi! Overall we interview about 2/3 of our applicants. Historically, round 1 has been smaller than round 2 so we can interview more people.

Sessions (Oct 24, 2007 3:18:22 PM)
What percentage of students are in the Real Estate concentration?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:18:22 PM)
We do not offer this concentration in the EWMBA program.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:18:47 PM)
There are two application deadlines for fall 2008. Applicants who submit completed applications by November 15, 2007 will be sent decision letters on approximately March 14, 2008. Applicants who submit completed applications by February 29, 2008 will be notified of their status around May 30, 2008.

parberk (Oct 24, 2007 3:19:58 PM)
How specific should goals be? After the first year in school, some students change their goals...

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:19:58 PM)
Goals should be very specific. We would like to know what you want to do and how you plan to get there. We understand that your goals may change but we encourage you to be as specific as possible.

MS (Oct 24, 2007 3:19:59 PM)
What is the minimum number of years of work experience recommended before applying for the MBA program?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:19:59 PM)
We don't have a minimum work experience requirement, however the average is about 8 years.

P_MBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:20:35 PM)
Do recommenders get a chance to save and update their on-line recommendation letter or do they have to do it in one shot?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:20:35 PM)
Recommenders can save their recommendations and update them as necessary. Once they send them to us, we will not accept any changes.

rt (Oct 24, 2007 3:20:49 PM)
As a reapplicant, can I submit 1 new Letter of recommendation. And for the 2nd, the recommender, who had submitted a LOR previously, is interested in knowing if he can add an Addendum to the previous one and not write an entirely new LOR all over again?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:20:49 PM)
An addendum is fine, but it would be better if the recommender could use his old letter, make updates/edits, and submit it as new. The entire new letter would then replace the old one.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:21:51 PM)
We evaluate all coursework completed, and take advanced degrees into consideration.

Zheng (Oct 24, 2007 3:22:00 PM)
Would you please tell me how the long distance students organize their traveling, lodging plan if they need to take a flight to the town? And what the budget range will be like?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:22:00 PM)
We do have students who fly in for Saturday classes. Please visit our Message Board for some advice from a student from WA: http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/ewmba/default.asp?action=9&read=47574&fid=536

Zheng (Oct 24, 2007 3:23:03 PM)
I already have one master in Electrical Engineering and one master in Management of Technology. And I want to have an advanced study to improve my career path in the business world especially in finance. Would those two non-related advanced degrees hurt my application? And will the MBA program think the third master from business school is not necessary for me even though I do want to improve my knowledge in business field more?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:23:03 PM)
If you have a strong reason for the MBA, this would not be held against you. In fact, almost 40% of our students already hold another master's degree.

Will (Oct 24, 2007 3:23:14 PM)
Is EWMBA more geared towards people who want to move up within their field? Are there any statistics of EWMBA students who want to change fields or go up the management ladder within their field? Will admissions try to get a balanced class in this respect?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:23:14 PM)
We see students who are looking to both advance in their current role and those who want to switch careers. Because we have an exceptional Career Services team that helps both groups you can decide what you want to do while in the program.

amipul (Oct 24, 2007 3:23:50 PM)
What is the average age of the applicants? Do you encourage diversity?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:23:50 PM)
The average age is 32. Yes, we encourage diversity.

routine125 (Oct 24, 2007 3:24:08 PM)
Can part-time MBA's participate in recruiting with the full-time MBA's?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:24:08 PM)
Yes, absolutely. EWMBA students participate in on-campus recruiting for full time positions and even internships. To participate in an internship however, you will need to quit your full time job.

Jonty (Oct 24, 2007 3:24:23 PM)
I have a question on nomenclature for our essays. How do we refer to the university? University of California - Berkeley? California? Berkeley? What about the business school/program itself? Haas? The Berkeley MBA? Thanks!

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:24:23 PM)
There isn't really one correct way. The full name of the university is University of California, Berkeley, but UC Berkeley is fine, too. When speaking about the program itself you should use Evening & Weekend MBA to be specific.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:25:13 PM)
We look at each application separately and we take all of your application into consideration.

Jay (Oct 24, 2007 3:25:21 PM)
What is the typical age for a Executive MBA (Berkeley-Columbia) applicant?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:25:21 PM)
The average age of the Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA student is 36 years.

bipin (Oct 24, 2007 3:26:46 PM)
Why does it take so long to announce admission decisions for round 1?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:26:46 PM)
First, we have to process all of your paperwork. Then, two to four people on the admissions committee review your application. We have a thorough process.

Jay (Oct 24, 2007 3:27:28 PM)
Is the first year typically more hard/time consuming than the remaining two? Also, do you know how many students changed career tracks while enrolled in the program ?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:27:28 PM)
The first year is the most challenging, since you are completing 10 core courses. During the program, about 65% of students get at least one promotion, while almost 35% change jobs/companies.

Jeff (Oct 24, 2007 3:27:37 PM)
I participate in a lot of extracurricular within my company but not as much outside. Does that have a less impact than if I participated in outside activities?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:27:37 PM)
We look at all types of extracurricular activities - they are all important.

Sessions (Oct 24, 2007 3:28:14 PM)
Is it easier to get in Round 1 or Round 2? Is there a difference?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:28:14 PM)
Historically our acceptance rate has been the same for both rounds.

bipin (Oct 24, 2007 3:28:34 PM)
Do you read the previous full-time application for a reapplicant?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:28:34 PM)
If you applied to the Full-time MBA last year, we consider your previous application as part of your file.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:28:45 PM)
Your masters degree will add to the academic portion of your application. It will help us evaluate how you handle graduate coursework. We consider the rigor of your institution and major when evaluating both undergraduate and graduate GPAs.

bipin (Oct 24, 2007 3:29:39 PM)
How many out of 2/3 interviewed do you admit?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:29:39 PM)
We admit a class of 240. Last year the total pool was 843.

Zheng (Oct 24, 2007 3:29:57 PM)
If at some point, I have other business or personal obligations and have to miss a class, is there any other way that I could catch up the missed ones?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:29:57 PM)
As a working professional, we understand that from time to time you may have a work conflict. In that case, you may ask for a class to be videotaped and you can view it on the web. It is important to note that participation is a large part of your grade, therefore students make attending class a priority.

abhi (Oct 24, 2007 3:30:51 PM)
Can we get a chance to meet face to face with currently enrolled students?

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 3:30:51 PM)
You can meet some of our students by attending an information session. Our next two are on November 1st and December 3rd. Go to https://ssl.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/eventsew/ for more information.

abhi (Oct 24, 2007 3:31:27 PM)
Are there any specific scholarships for international students?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:31:27 PM)
We do not have any specific scholarships for international students, however they are welcome to apply for the Evening & Weekend Grant. For more information about financial aid, please see: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/EWMBA/finaid/index.html

rt (Oct 24, 2007 3:31:41 PM)
Does a stagnating career as a technical lead play against you in the application? I have over 10 years of experience, with 5 as a tech lead.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:31:41 PM)
My advice would be to not give the impression of a 'stagnating career' in your application. If you have not had a promotion, we will look closely at your accomplishments and would want to see increased responsibilities over time. Emphasize the positives!

Jay (Oct 24, 2007 3:31:43 PM)
What facilities are available to Haas alumni? In your experience, have you noticed the EWMBA alumni to be as strongly connected as the full-time alumni?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:31:43 PM)
Even as a student you are invited to various alumni events in the area where you can connect with other students (in the various programs) as well as alumni. Alumni also have access to Career Services. Yes, our entire alumni base is strong and active.

abhi (Oct 24, 2007 3:32:02 PM)
How many people are usually enrolled in a batch?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:32:02 PM)
We enroll 240 students every fall.

bipin (Oct 24, 2007 3:32:38 PM)
Are there any scholarships or financial aid available and what is the criteria?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:32:38 PM)
For information about financial aid and grants offered, please see: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/EWMBA/finaid/index.html

What are some specializations that software professionals can take in EWMBA?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:32:53 PM)
The EWMBA is a general management degree with no official specializations or concentrations. But we offer a wide range of electives - 25-30 per semester, so you can focus on an area of interest. Here are some recommended electives by career path: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/EWMBA/edupath.html

parberk (Oct 24, 2007 3:33:55 PM)
I am a team lead in high tech industry and I think my goals may change after exposing to Career services at Haas. How should I project my goals in essays?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:33:55 PM)
Be honest and forthright. You should have specific goals going into the program, but we will not be upset if those goals change!

rmondal (Oct 24, 2007 3:35:14 PM)
Is it possible to complete the MBA within in 18 months?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:35:14 PM)
The Evening & Weekend MBA is designed to be 6 semesters. You can complete it in 5 semesters if you wish. That is the only acceleration option we have.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:35:27 PM)
International students and residents are treated the same in the application process. Your visa status does not matter. If your undergraduate education is from outside the US, then please read the application instructions carefully regarding transcript requirements.

Miguel (Oct 24, 2007 3:35:46 PM)
My TOEFL is 250 (computer test) in February 2005. Is there a minimum for this?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:35:46 PM)
The minimum score for computer-based TOEFL is 230. However, TOEFL is valid only valid for 2 years. The earliest you could have taken the TOEFL for Fall 2008 admission is June 2006, so you would need to retake it if necessary in your case.

mayiblr (Oct 24, 2007 3:35:58 PM)
Hi Admissions committee. I am right now employed in India and will move to Bay area sometime in February/March, is it required for me to be present in the US during the application period?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:35:58 PM)
No, but if invited to interview, you will be required to come to the Berkeley campus.

Sessions (Oct 24, 2007 3:38:12 PM)
Beth, your website states that you have a real estate specialty. Is that incorrect? http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/specialties.html

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:38:12 PM)
Real Estate is one of the strong, key topical areas at Haas, but we do not offer a certificate program. There are many great electives, conferences, and extracurricular activities in real estate, run through the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics.

Sebastian (Oct 24, 2007 3:38:21 PM)
Are 4 years of work experience too few?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:38:21 PM)
4 years of work experience is in the lower end of our applicant pool, the average is 8 years. We do consider the depth and breadth of your work experience as well, not just years, and look at all the aspects of the application when making the decision.

rmondal (Oct 24, 2007 3:38:35 PM)
Hi, I am getting recommendations from my previous university professors, do I need to get any recommendations from my previous employer?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:38:35 PM)
We strongly encourage recommendations from: 1. a current, direct supervisor and 2. a former direct supervisor. We do not suggest recommendations from professors.

amipul (Oct 24, 2007 3:39:18 PM)
I am involved actively in a non-profit institution outside of work. Can I submit a recommendation from my supervisor at that non-profit institute?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:39:18 PM)
Yes, if your involvement is significant. Typically we prefer to see two professional letters of recommendation.

P_MBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:39:42 PM)
I'm undergoing Certification in Business Admin (MBA foundation) from UC Berkeley Extension. How can I enter this info in the Education section of the application even though it is not completed yet?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:39:42 PM)
That's great. You can submit a transcript for the coursework completed and simply note in the education section that you don't have a graduation date.

P_MBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:40:28 PM)
In the Education section of on-line application, there is a section for International GPA. What are the expectations from International students while filling in this part?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:40:28 PM)
We are expecting something like 'first class with distinction' or '83/100' or '95%', depending on your school's grading system. Do not convert to a 4.0 GPA. Our staff is well familiar with international grading systems.

SeekingMBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:41:25 PM)
What attributes of work experience does the admission committee look at? Does one need to have any management experience? Would people with purely technical backgrounds have a competitive disadvantage?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:41:25 PM)
Whatever your job function or industry, we are looking for significant accomplishments, career progression and leadership potential. Project management and team leadership are great assets to a technical background.

RR (Oct 24, 2007 3:41:33 PM)
Can you do an evening MBA with a FT MPH in one year?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:41:33 PM)
Unfortunately, no.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:41:52 PM)
It is possible to take Full-time MBA electives, based on the space available. Many courses are also cross-listed with the Full-time program.

SeekingMBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:41:52 PM)
Hi, what kind of attributes of work experience does the admissions committee look for? Does one need to have management experience or does a strict technical background work?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:41:52 PM)
We are looking for progress in your career, increased responsibility, and clear accomplishments. With regard to management experience it is not required but you can highlight any of your leadership experience at work or in your extracurricular activities in the application.

GIC (Oct 24, 2007 3:42:19 PM)
What's the average number of years work experience of people applying to the full time MBA program?

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 3:42:19 PM)
For the Full-time MBA, the average number of years work experience is 5.

Nellie (Oct 24, 2007 3:43:41 PM)
Hi, could anyone tell me where to get the recommendation forms?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:43:41 PM)
If you want to submit a hard copy of the recommendation, you can download it from the Application Instructions, or the Recommendation part of the application. You can have the recommender submit the letter online.

rt (Oct 24, 2007 3:43:57 PM)
Does getting an A in one of the prerequisites help improve the academic profile of a 660 GMAT with a 3.3 GPA?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:43:57 PM)
It can help, but that profile is right on par with our average student on it's own. If you can submit the prerequisite transcript by the application deadline (or even a little bit late) it can't hurt! Taking prerequisites early for As can help your application if you lack a quantitative background or did poorly on the quantitative section of the GMAT.

Nellie (Oct 24, 2007 3:44:00 PM)
Hi Molly, could you please tell me where should I have my 2 people enter the recommendations?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:44:00 PM)
In the application there is a place for you to enter the recommenders email address. We will send the recommendation letter to the recommender at the address you provide.

Will (Oct 24, 2007 3:44:56 PM)
When should we expect to receive the interview invites? Will those applicants who do not get the invites get to know earlier before March for Round1?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:44:56 PM)
We interview throughout the entire round: so round 1 interviews will be held mid-November through mid-March.

kwan (Oct 24, 2007 3:45:24 PM)
I want to atone for my poor academic sins at college but I have good work experience and achievements since. Does the program admission look beyond college grades?

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 3:45:24 PM)
Every aspect of the application is used in making an admissions decision: letters of recommendation, past academic performance, career progression and goals, essays, and the GMAT. We look at everything submitted and make a decision based on the whole picture.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:45:29 PM)
The EWMBA students have their own career counselors, who are focused on experienced-hire population. You can take part in On-Campus Recruiting, career events, in-person counseling, etc.

rmondal (Oct 24, 2007 3:45:54 PM)
I have a masters in rural development and have 4 years work experience in the rural development sector. Am I eligible for applying to the MBA program?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:45:54 PM)
Yes. All you need to be eligible is a bachelor's degree. We also recommend at least 3 years of work experience.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:46:47 PM)
42 units are required to complete the EWMBA. Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA is about 60 units.

Jeff (Oct 24, 2007 3:47:00 PM)
If I apply in round 1 -- when can I expect to hear to go in for an interview -- if I get one.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:47:00 PM)
You could be invited to interview anytime between the application and decision dates. We usually invite via email.

Monika (Oct 24, 2007 3:47:11 PM)
On the EWMBA website, it lists 4 specialties. Given that the Real Estate concentration is not an option for the EW program, what exactly do the specialties mean? I am interested in focusing on the Global Management specialty with my electives. When you say that you do not offer the concentration, do you simply mean that you do not offer a certificate? Please clarify. Thank you!

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:47:11 PM)
Yes, that is correct. We offer the classes but not the certificate.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:47:26 PM)
The size of the waitlist varies every year, as does the number of students admitted from the waitlist. We encourage applicants to submit new materials while on the waitlist.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:48:15 PM)
We do a thorough review of your application after we interview you. So your interviewer will not have read your application and will simply be asking questions based on your resume.

j (Oct 24, 2007 3:48:29 PM)
Does it matter who your letters of recommendation come from? For example, would you look more closely at person A who has letters from higher executives, over person B with similar credentials who has letters from lower ranking employers.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:48:29 PM)
We care more about your relationship to the recommender than the title. The recommender should be able to supply details and examples of your management potential.

P_MBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:48:47 PM)
While answering the short answer essay 2 of the application, do we have to repeat which option we are answering or have to mention whether it is a option A, B or C of Question 2?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:48:47 PM)
No, you can simply answer the question.

routine125 (Oct 24, 2007 3:49:15 PM)
At what time do classes usually start in the evenings and weekends? Are there choices?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:49:15 PM)
Classes run from 6-9:30pm Monday-Thursday and from 9-6 (core classes) and 9-12 and 1-4 (electives) on Saturdays.

Ksenia (Oct 24, 2007 3:49:54 PM)
Will all classes take place at the UC Berkeley campus?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:49:54 PM)
All Evening classes take place at the Haas School of Business. 50% of Weekend or Saturday classes take place at Haas, the other 50% take place at a Santa Clara facility.

rt (Oct 24, 2007 3:50:21 PM)
As a Consultant, do I put information about my company (which is self owned) or about the company I am exclusively consulting for, in the Sales numbers, etc?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:50:22 PM)
If you are a self-employed consultant, you should be listing your own company as your employer, and the client company as a client under 'responsibilities'.

MaharajA10e (Oct 24, 2007 3:50:48 PM)
Is the admissions committee comprised of the same individuals for the PhD program?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:50:48 PM)
No, the Evening & Weekend Admissions Committee is different from the Ph.D. committee.

Jeff (Oct 24, 2007 3:51:25 PM)
I understand the resume is a big part of the application packet and some suggested that it is not quite. Do you have tips on writing a compelling MBA resume?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:51:25 PM)
We prefer a 1-2 page chronological resume. It should be an easy to read snapshot of your educational background and career. We will use the resume in your interview.

Admissions_Sarah (Oct 24, 2007 3:52:26 PM)
Hi all! Thank you for joining us today. The chat will be wrapping up in a few minutes. We greatly appreciate your questions. We apologize for not getting to everyone. Please check back on our website next week for a transcript of today’s chat and for future chat dates. Molly, Aija and Beth will continue to address some questions already in their cue, but we will not be forwarding additional questions.

Jonty (Oct 24, 2007 3:52:37 PM)
Regarding annual sales numbers, you mention using the entire company's info, but what if it's a multinational? For example, a business unit of Philips may be $70mm in annual revenue, but the entire company is in the billions. Is the business unit we worked for the best level to represent?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:52:37 PM)
Please use your best judgment. If you work for a very large company, we will be familiar with its sales figures.

Will (Oct 24, 2007 3:52:41 PM)
Based on the recruiters who come to Haas, what is their different feedback among Haas Full-time MBA, EWMBA and Executive MBA?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:52:41 PM)
The profile of our students is different primarily based on their work experience. Full-time students have an average of 5 years of work experience, Evening Weekend students have 8 year, and Berkeley-Columbia students have 12 years. I haven't heard specific feedback from recruiters about the different programs.

Sebastian (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:19 PM)
How long in advance will we receive the date for the interview? Getting a trans-atlantic flight within a few weeks is not that easy.

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:19 PM)
Usually the dates are for the next couple of weeks, but we will work with you to find a date if none of the available dates fit your schedule.

Amit (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:24 PM)
As a reapplicant I need to only submit one recommendation letter. However it is also mentioned that any effort to completely redo my application will be looked at positively. In that respect would it help if I get two letters of recommendation?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:24 PM)
If you can get a strong, new letter of recommendation I would encourage you to do so.

P_MBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:52 PM)
If you are a project leader with 4-5 people reporting to you and you are involved in the annual performance review process for those 4-5 people but the official reviews are completed by the manager, can you report those 4-5 employees as your direct reports?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:52 PM)
As a project leader, you cannot report those employees as your direct reports. The definition we use for direct reports is that you are their manager and complete the performance reviews.

abhi (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:56 PM)
How many years will it take to get the cost back by increase in salary?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:53:56 PM)
With regards to ROI, it varies from student to student.

Is there a list of employers that have come to Berkeley for career events in the past few years?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:54:49 PM)
Yes, here is a list of recruiting companies: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/groups/careercenter/corplinks.html

P_MBA (Oct 24, 2007 3:55:19 PM)
Do we have to mail (in the package) the GMAT and TOEFL official scores along with the transcripts?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:55:19 PM)
You do not need to mail your score reports to us, but please remember to request the official scores be sent to us from ETS, and enter the scores in your application.

Will (Oct 24, 2007 3:55:20 PM)
Does the admission try to create "diversity" for the EWMBA class? This means, will there be unequal competition based on career goals, professional background (which industry) or citizenship?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:55:20 PM)
We select the best candidates overall. There are no quotas or preference given based on any criteria other than the overall strength of the applicant.

GIC (Oct 24, 2007 3:56:49 PM)
Would having only 4 years work experience hurt me when applying to the EWMBA program?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:56:49 PM)
You will want to show that you are on the fast track, and emphasize what you have to offer a classroom or team, with students that have on average 8 years of experience.

ewmba_aspirant (Oct 24, 2007 3:56:55 PM)
I used to be a project lead in my previous job. With my new employer (relatively flat org), my title is senior engineer, albeit with big engineering responsibilities and 10% pay hike. Will my change in title hurt me (in terms of career progression)?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:56:55 PM)
It's important to clearly provide details as you have above in your resume and in the Employment History section of the application. Your responsibilities and accomplishments will be taken into consideration.

amipul (Oct 24, 2007 3:57:46 PM)
My former direct supervisor has left the company but is willing to give me the recommendation letter, will that count?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:57:46 PM)
Sure but please make sure she/he gives details about their title and role when they worked with you.

Jeff (Oct 24, 2007 3:57:57 PM)
Any tips on writing a compelling resume that shows progression? Some suggested not to model a MBA resume after a typical job resume - do you agree with that?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:57:57 PM)
I like to see all promotion within a company highlighted. In addition to your job description, list accomplishments. Overall, we want a 1-2 page chronological resume.

andrew (Oct 24, 2007 3:58:16 PM)
What is the acceptance rate for EWMBA compared to a full-time Haas MBA?

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 3:58:17 PM)
The number of applications we receive is much smaller than the Full-time MBA, last year we received about 850 applications, whereas the Full-time program's numbers are in thousands. However, our pool of applicants is slightly different.

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 3:58:59 PM)
Extracurricular activities help us get to know you and understand what you like to do in your free time. They are considered along with all of the other parts of your application.

amipul (Oct 24, 2007 3:59:12 PM)
Do gaps in employment history reflect negatively on the quality of application?

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 3:59:12 PM)
It depends on the reasons for the gaps. Please do your best to explain them well.

routine125 (Oct 24, 2007 4:00:15 PM)
Is there a waitlist for the EWMBA program? If you are on it, what chance is there to be accepted into the program?

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 4:00:15 PM)
In the past we have offered people spots on the waitlist. It is your choice if you want to accept a spot. The chances of getting in from the waitlist vary from year to year.

Admissions_Beth (Oct 24, 2007 4:00:36 PM)
Thank you all for chatting with us!

Admissions_Aija (Oct 24, 2007 4:00:59 PM)

admissions_molly (Oct 24, 2007 4:01:52 PM)
Yes, you can. However, we strongly suggest that you get recommendations from your current direct supervisor and a former direct supervisor.

If applicants are interviewed from mid-November through mid-March, does this mean that those who get interviewed earlier is a "better" applicant?

We will interview late November through early March. Earlier is not necessarily better - is random.
