Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:01:41 PM)Hi everyone!
NMS (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:02 PM)Is there a place where we can see demographics of the current Evening/Weekend student body?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:02 PM)NMS - you can find details about the 2011 class profile on our website: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/class.html
Girish (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:17 PM)How much minimum score is necessary for admission? I took GMAT in Dec and got a score of 600. I think this scope may not be enough. So, I am thinking taking GMAT and again and apply next year. Do I have a chance with this scope if I apply before the March deadline?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:17 PM)Hello Girish - A score of 600 is outside of our 80% range of successful applicants for the fall 2008 class (640 to 760). If you believe you can increase your score by at least another 30 points, I always recommend that applicants retake the exam.
Jorge B. (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:27 PM)Hello, is it possible to complete the weekend MBA in less than 3 years?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:27 PM)Hi Jorge - The program is set up to be completed in 6 semesters, however you could complete it in 5 semesters.
claire (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:48 PM)I understand that we will be notified of the decision by May 29. Is it possible that we may hear earlier? If so, how much earlier?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:03:49 PM)Hello Claire. The notification date for all applicants is May 29th.
Israel (Feb 19, 2009 2:04:33 PM)Hello there. I like the weekend format, but for three years? All my Saturdays for the next 3 years will be taken up by classes at Berkeley. What is the retention rate?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:04:33 PM)Israel, our retention rate is extremely high. Additionally, in your second an third years when you are taking elective courses, your schedule opens up and is much more flexible.
NMS (Feb 19, 2009 2:04:46 PM)When is the correct admissions due date for the next cycle? In some places it says 3/2 and in others 3/11.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:04:46 PM)Hello NMS - March 2 is the deadline for the EWMBA Program. March 11 is the deadline for the Full-time Program.
Elena (Feb 19, 2009 2:05:04 PM)Hello! Can you please advise if there is a minimum GMAT score required for admission?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:05:04 PM)Elena, there is no minimum GMAT score required for admission.
NMS (Feb 19, 2009 2:05:33 PM)Are you expecting a significant increase in the number of applicants this year due to the economy?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:05:33 PM)The number of applications we saw in Round 1 was about equal to what we saw last year. We will not know about Round 2 until March 2.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:06:37 PM)We do not offer deferrals for the EWMBA Program. If we do not have official transcripts showing your completion of the prerequisites by August 7, your offer of admission will be rescinded.
Dmitriy A (Feb 19, 2009 2:06:53 PM)Hi. Having spoken to a few current students and having read online tips for applications, I seem to be getting conflicting information about what the personal statements/essays should be about. Do you think it's more important for us to emphasize why an MBA is the right decision for us at this point in our lives, or do you look more for individuality and information that you would not otherwise gather from our resume/academic record.
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:06:53 PM)Dmitriy A, we ask that you use the essay to tell us more about yourself and your background. The goal of the essay is to get a better sense of who you are as a person.
SecondTry (Feb 19, 2009 2:07:29 PM)Can we submit GMAT score after the application deadline date?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:07:29 PM)SecondTry, GMAT scores must be submitted on or before the application deadline of March 2, 2009.

Marina Shrago (Feb 19, 2009 2:08:12 PM)Hi Tammy - how difficult is it for evening/weekend MBA students to access the courses that are part of the Management of Organizations program? (http://groups.haas.berkeley.edu/obir/)
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:08:12 PM)Hi Marina, it should not be difficult at all, as long as you are flexible with your schedule (many courses outside of the EWMBA Program are offered during the daytime).
TAB (Feb 19, 2009 2:08:32 PM)Hello, Can you tell me more about how the invitation process works. Are they sent in bulk within the first few weeks after the deadline, etc..? The website states up until the Decision Deadline but I imagine that is a small%. Thanks
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:08:32 PM)We conduct interviews of applicants by invitation only. Receiving an invitation to interview should be taken as a sign of interest on the part of the Admissions Committee. However, an interview is not required for admission. We begin interviewing applicants as soon as possible after the admissions deadline (March 2nd)and interviews will continue until close to the notification date (May 29th). They are not sent out in bulk at the beginning, they are actually pretty consistent throughout that timeline.
Jorge B. (Feb 19, 2009 2:08:45 PM)Is there any expected(or speculated)tuition increases for the next incoming class?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:08:45 PM)Jorge B - Each year tuition has increased by around 4-5%. This year will most likely be the same as in the past.
Paul (Feb 19, 2009 2:09:00 PM)How are applicants notified of acceptance?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:09:00 PM)We will send an email to all applicants for Round 1 on March 13 telling them to check their online status. We will do the same for Round 2 applicants on May 29.
Marina Shrago (Feb 19, 2009 2:09:13 PM)Do we need to report non-collegiate classes taken after graduation, e. g. programming/systems administration training? If so - how should it be reported?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:09:13 PM)Marina, if you have taken a course - please include the official transcript from the institution you attended. Certifications, etc can be listed on your resume and also within the education section of the application.
Joaquin (Feb 19, 2009 2:10:00 PM)Do you need to have the letter of rec by Mar 2?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:10:00 PM)All supplemental materials are required to be postmarked by the admission deadline, March 2nd.
KF (Feb 19, 2009 2:10:19 PM)What is the process for submitting supplemental material (for our application)to the admissions office?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:10:19 PM)Please send your supplemental materials to: Evening & Weekend MBA Admissions, 430 Student Services Bldg. #1906, Berkeley, CA 94720-1906. Official transcripts must be in sealed envelopes.
Gagan (Feb 19, 2009 2:10:23 PM)Hi, Do I need to be employed for the three years while in the program?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:10:23 PM)Gagan, no, it is not a requirement that you be employed in order to apply to or be accepted into the EWMBA Program at Haas. It is preferred, but not required. The EWMBA Program is an MBA designed for working professionals.
Ram (Feb 19, 2009 2:11:25 PM)Question related to the application process. Is it ok mail the transcripts before submitting the online application?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:11:25 PM)Hi Ram - Yes, feel free to send your transcripts to our office prior to submitting your application.
NMS (Feb 19, 2009 2:11:42 PM)To place out of the Calculus prerequisite, the GMAT math score must be at or above the 80th percentile...is that right?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:11:42 PM)NMS - That is correct.
vj (Feb 19, 2009 2:12:06 PM)I am not sure if my question got thru. I have been self employed and been consulting on short term projects for the last 2 years. can I get my letters of recommendation from my previous long term employers
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:12:06 PM)vj, yes, you may get recommendations from your former employers/direct supervisors.
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:13:01 PM)PMD - Once submitted, transcripts become the property of the University and are not returned.
mfoor (Feb 19, 2009 2:13:02 PM)The application asks for previous GMAT scores with dates associated with each score. However the dates are within the last five years. What happens if you took the test longer than five years ago. Do you still need to report that? If so, what would you put as your date? My understanding from GMAC is that scores older than 5 years are not on the record.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:13:02 PM)Hello mfoor, We do not need scores older than 5 years.
Israel (Feb 19, 2009 2:13:17 PM)I live and work in Los Angeles. Without weight to other conditions, is this program realistic for me to pursue?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:13:17 PM)Hello Israel. If you were to choose the weekend cohort and take only weekend courses, it is realistic. The majority of our students live in the Bay Area, but we do have students as far as Colorado.
SecondTry (Feb 19, 2009 2:13:31 PM)I am a reapplicant. What kind of comparison do you do with my previous application?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:13:31 PM)SecondTry, we will look at both applications to see what improvements you have made academically, professionally, and personally since your previous submission.
DMS (Feb 19, 2009 2:14:06 PM)Does the Admissions staff look upon re-applications with any prejudice? I am asking largely because I don't believe I performed close to my potential on the GMAT, and am debating whether I would be hurting my chances of admission for Fall 2010 if I apply for 2009 but am not accepted. Thanks.
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:14:06 PM)DMS, no, we do not look upon reapplicants with any prejudice.
Elena (Feb 19, 2009 2:14:26 PM)To follow up on Marina's question ... I was under the impression any continuing education course transcripts should not be sent? can you please confirm?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:14:26 PM)Yes, they can be sent, but it is not required if they are continuing education transcripts. I do recommend, however, if you did well in those courses, to send in transcripts of any coursework completed after your Bachelors degree.
AMBA (Feb 19, 2009 2:14:36 PM)Approximately what % are admitted in round 1
[Back to top]
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:14:36 PM)AMBA - Historically, the percentage of applicants admitted is about the same in both rounds. We do not have specific numbers.
claire (Feb 19, 2009 2:16:06 PM)Can you tell me more about what you are looking for in the supplemental question about College/post-college activities, hobbies and memberships. Does this include for example, all volunteer work? activities like yoga and meditation? This could be very long. What format should we use for this question?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:16:07 PM)Yes, we are asking primarily for volunteer work and memberships, but feel free to include hobbies if that is a big part of what you do in your free time. Applicants in the past have listed this information in bullet format, or explained in a paragraph. It is up to you.
US (Feb 19, 2009 2:18:04 PM)Given the state of the economy, are you seeing roughly the same amount of applicants this year or significantly less/more compared to prior years.
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:18:04 PM)US - We are seeing roughly the same. Our numbers are posted in the Summer, 2009.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:18:42 PM)We are looking for what has changed since the previous times you applied. I would recommend highlighting any promotions, salary increases, responsibilities, etc. Help make it easy for the reader to see where and how you've progressed since your previous applications.
Girish (Feb 19, 2009 2:18:50 PM)I am enterprise software field for more that 15 years. I worked as Group Manager at oracle and then Director in a startup. I am thinking of doing MBA so that it will help me to further my career growth. With this experience and a GMAT of 600, Do I have a chance for this year or you recommend to take GMAT again?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:18:50 PM)Girish, work experience and GMAT performance are only two of the many criteria we evaluate when considering an applicant for admission. That said, the middle 80% range for the GMAT last year was 640-750. Our most competitive applicants typically have scored within that range.
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:18:59 PM)We will not waive prerequisites with completion of the CFA exam, however if you feel that you now have the math and stats knowledge, I would suggest taking the waiver exams.
KF (Feb 19, 2009 2:19:05 PM)If we are invited to the interview, will we be given a choice of dates? If not, can we request the interview to be rescheduled if the time does not work?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:19:05 PM)KF - Yes, you are given a choice of dates. If you are travelling, we can assist you in finding a convenient time for you to come in.
Sai (Feb 19, 2009 2:20:07 PM)Is there a certain time frame required before a student can switch from the part time to the full time program after commencing classes
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:20:07 PM)Great question, Sai. Yes, you must complete one year of core coursework before you are eligible to apply for transfer to the FT Program.
Israel (Feb 19, 2009 2:20:39 PM)How do you mean by my schedule opening up more after the first year? As I view the curriculum, the number of courses does not decrease. They seem to stay at 2 per term. Aren't the electives required?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:20:39 PM)Israel, electives are required. However, in your second and third year, you are no longer restricted to Saturday classes. You may take an elective course during the week if you so choose.
vj (Feb 19, 2009 2:21:26 PM)Do we need to take the TOEFL before March 2 or even submit the scores. I couldn't get a date till this weekend 21st and I believe they take 3 weeks to give the results. Will my application be accepted if I take the test before the 2nd?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:21:26 PM)VJ - As long as you sit the exam before or on March 2, you will be able to submit your application. Please email us at ewmbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu when you receive your scores, as well as having your official scores sent to us.
Ram (Feb 19, 2009 2:21:43 PM)Regarding statistics pre-requisite - since I’m applying in the second round, I would only find out if I got admitted (or not)in May. Is there sufficient time to take the stats pre-requisite after that? Or do you recommend taking the course before?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:21:43 PM)Ram - We recommend taking the prerequisite courses as soon as possible. If you don't have them completed by August 7, 2009, you will not be able to enroll in classes and will not be able to defer.
Gagan (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:19 PM)How many people are admitted in round 1 and 2?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:19 PM)Last year we had 854 total applicants, and 240 were admitted into the program. I do not have specific numbers, but each round we normally admit about 30% of applicants.
Elena (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:19 PM)Is there a way that applications are weighted? i.e. GPA - 25%, GMAT - 25%, reco letters - 10%, etc?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:19 PM)Elena - No - the review process is holistic. No percentages are placed on each area.
Omar (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:22 PM)What percentage of Applicants offered Admissions to the EWMBA Program come from small-business backgrounds?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:23 PM)Omar, unfortunately, I do not know a specific percentage. I will say that our students come from a variety of backgrounds and professional fields/functions.
claire (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:32 PM)Is it possible to do a concentration in nonprofit and public leadership with the evening/weekend MBA program? If my schedule allows can I take a class or two in the day time?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:22:32 PM)Hi Claire, Absolutely! We don't necessarily have "concentrations", but you are free to take electives in your 2nd and 3rd years geared towards your interests.
law2255 (Feb 19, 2009 2:23:25 PM)If I apply in fall, I will be 6-8 years out of school. What do I need to do to fulfill my math requirements?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:23:25 PM)Applicants are required to complete prerequisites in math and statistics before enrolling in the program. For more information, please visit our web site at http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/EWMBA/HPP.html There are three ways to meet the prerequisites: 1. One course per subject, taken within five years of August 2009 for 3 semester units (5 quarter units)with a grade of B or better. This pdf document lists approved courses: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/PrereqClassList.pdf 2. A GMAT quantitative score of 80th percentile or above satisfies the math prerequisite only. 3. Waiver Exams are offered once a month, January through May. To sign up for a waiver exam, please visit: https://ssl.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/eventsew/
naw (Feb 19, 2009 2:23:26 PM)Am an international student and wanted know if the is any other time to start the MBA program or time during the year when one can join college other than during fall semester
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:23:26 PM)naw - Fall is our only start date.
jon (Feb 19, 2009 2:23:51 PM)Is it possible to defer admission?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:23:51 PM)jon - Our policy is that we do not grant deferrals.
Lindsey Lincoln (Feb 19, 2009 2:24:09 PM)Hi Admissions Staff, Thank you for providing us with one last chance to ask questions. If we do get invited to interview after submitting our applications, how would you recommend we prepare for these meetings? Are the interviews in person? How long do they last? Are they with students or admissions staff? Are they one-on-one or in a group?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:24:09 PM)Hi Lindsey! Think of the interviews as you would a job interview. We aren't going to ask any trick questions. The interviews last 30 minutes and are usually with just one staff member. The EWMBA Program does not use students or alumni to interview; you will interview with one of our staff.
M (Feb 19, 2009 2:26:04 PM)If I have Masters degree from US and have scored over 75 percentile then we don’t need toefl do I?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:26:05 PM)M - If you hold a US Masters degree, you are waived from the TOEFL requirement.
warrior00 (Feb 19, 2009 2:27:17 PM)I did my undergrad in India. How do I convert the performance in percentage into GPA for the application??
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:27:17 PM)warrior00 - Please do not convert your scores.
SecondTry (Feb 19, 2009 2:28:43 PM)OK, so I am confused. When I called the office, I was told absolutely nothing from my previous application is retained and I would need to resubmit everything - including letter of recommendation even if getting them from the same recommender. You just said you will be doing a side-by-side comparison. So, my question is: 1. Do I need to get recommendations from new people? 2. In the short essays where we get to pick one of three topics, do I need to pick a new essay topic?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:28:43 PM)SecondTry, We will be looking to see what you have improved upon since the last time you applied. You are correct - we do not retain materials older two years. If you applied last year, we will want to know what has changed since then. All parts of the application are required, including letters of recommendation (even if getting them from the same recommender - we want updated ones). You can pick any essay topic you like, even if you would like to pick the same topic as last or previous years and cut-and-paste.
Vero (Feb 19, 2009 2:28:58 PM) Hello, the essays instructions state that answers should be relevant. However, none of the questions ask why I am pursuing an MBA or why I'm pursuing an MBA from Haas. Is there a reason that is not asked? should we work those answers into our long essay ?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:28:58 PM) Vero, Short Answer question 1 asks: What are your short-term and long-term professional goals? Why is this the right time for you to pursue an MBA? You may also work your reasoning into your long essay should you wish to explain further.
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:29:27 PM) EagerLearner, no, there is no residency requirement for the EWMBA Program.
warrior00 (Feb 19, 2009 2:29:31 PM) So you suggest that I mention the percentage directly
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:29:31 PM) warrior00 - Yes, please do. Our admissions committee is skilled in accessing transcripts from various countries.
Gagan (Feb 19, 2009 2:30:16 PM) Can EWMBA students participate in student clubs/groups?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:30:16 PM) Gagan - Yes, EWMBA students can participate in the clubs/groups here at Haas.
MBAEnthu (Feb 19, 2009 2:30:51 PM) I have heard from two of my friends that they were waitlisted in Round 1 and were finally admitted in May'08. I also saw a message in the Berkeley web page that EWMBA does wait list candidates. Do you have a percentage of candidates waitlisted or a number. In other words do you waitlist many since this may affect their decisions in other MBA programs.
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:30:51 PM) MBAEnthu, yes, we do have a waitlist. However, we do not have any specific numbers or percentage of candidates on the waitlist.
KF (Feb 19, 2009 2:30:55 PM) how soon will the results of the waiver exam be available?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:30:55 PM) KF - Within 2 weeks of the exam date.
warrior00 (Feb 19, 2009 2:31:56 PM) Hi, I am applying for EWMBA this fall. For the second recommendation letter, I have 2 people who agreed to give me rec letter. One knows me very well and worked with me very closely for 8 years but left our group in 2007. He was my former supervisor. The other also knows me well but worked with me very closely during the last 1 & 1/2 years. Which one should I pick?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:31:56 PM) Hi warrior00, Both sound great. Use your best judgment as to who will give you the most thorough recommendation.
AMBA (Feb 19, 2009 2:31:59 PM) I am not sure if my q went through. Could we take waiver exam prior to being admitted?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:31:59 PM) AMBA - yes, you can take the waiver exam prior to being admitted.
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:32:04 PM) Both sound like they would be great recommenders. We normally prefer a current supervisor, however I would suggest whoever would take the time to write a very thorough letter and be able to give us the most insight into your work performance and skill / abilities would be the best option. If you do choose your previous supervisor, be sure to explain that choice in the application (there is a question specific to this) .
AMBA (Feb 19, 2009 2:32:35 PM) Could we take waiver exam even if we are not admitted?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:32:35 PM) Yes, as long as you are applying for the fall 2009 cycle, you may take the waiver exam.
Ram (Feb 19, 2009 2:33:07 PM) Regarding the statistics pre-req. In the application do we need to mention details on which course and when we plan to attend?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:33:07 PM) Yes. We will also need a transcript after the course is completed.
janice (Feb 19, 2009 2:33:22 PM) Is there a disadvantage in taking GMAT again? Or will you consider only the best GMAT score?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:33:22 PM) Hi Janice, We do only consider the highest GMAT score. I would say if you feel you could score significantly higher by retaking the GMAT, please do so.
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:33:51 PM) 95% of all students receive their first choice of cohort. Cohort preference is a question in the application; therefore, you choose the cohort that works best for your schedule. Evening classes are all conducted in Berkeley. Saturday classes split time between Berkeley & our South Bay location.
Winner (Feb 19, 2009 2:34:12 PM) In what cases is TOEFL waived?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:34:12 PM) Winner - if you have completed one year of advanced degree coursework from a US institution by the time of application, the TOEFL is waived.
Awi (Feb 19, 2009 2:34:28 PM) I have requested my undergrad and grad institutions to send the transcripts to Haas school directly. Do I need to send a copy just in case it doesn't arrive in time
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:34:28 PM) If you have already requested that they be sent to us, you do not need to send them as well.
sid (Feb 19, 2009 2:36:08 PM) How soon can one expect to hear for interviews following March 2nd deadline
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:36:08 PM) sid - Interview invitations are sent out at any time from the deadline date to the decision date.
AMBA (Feb 19, 2009 2:36:34 PM) For international students, aside from original transcripts, do we need to submit degree certificates?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:36:34 PM) AMBA - Yes, degree certificates are required as well.
Vero (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:02 PM) Is it recommended or encouraged to explain in our essays why we are pursuing an MBA and why at Haas? None of the questions has that specifically.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:02 PM) Hi Vero, Excellent question. We already assume that you are passionate about attending Haas. What we are looking for in the application is to find out about you. Most often we receive essays declaring why an applicant wants to attend Haas, but we miss what makes you an exceptional candidate. TAB (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:19 PM) Are there classes, within the program or closely related, that I can take through UC extension if I am not accepted.
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:19 PM) There are some great MBA prep courses that are offered through UC extension. They are not, however, transferable to our program. You can browse classes at: http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/
NMS (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:35 PM) On the demographics page, I don't see how many students are people of color. I see International, but not African-American, Latino, etc. Can you please advise?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:35 PM) NMS - unfortunately, I do not have those specific statistics. I will say, however, that our demographic mirrors the diversity of the Bay Area. We have students from numerous ethnicities, backgrounds, and all different walks of life.
claire (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:47 PM) How do we know that you have received transcripts?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:37:47 PM) claire - After the deadline it takes us approximately 6 weeks to process applications. During that time, you will receive an email letting you know if we still need your transcripts.
Ram (Feb 19, 2009 2:38:07 PM) Hi, Are the students given choices of interview dates? For instance, I plan to travel for 3 weeks in March. Will it be too late to schedule an interview in Apr?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:38:07 PM) No, we can be flexible and understand that many of applicants have work obligations. If you are sure you will be gone for certain dates, feel free to send us an email at ewmbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu and we will include a note in your file.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:38:26 PM) Yes, you may only take the waiver exam once per year.
Lin (Feb 19, 2009 2:39:05 PM) In my application, I stated that I will take stat waiver exam. But I started to take stat class in community college. Do I need to contact Haas MBA office to change before Mar first round final decision?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:39:05 PM) Lin - No, you do not need to contact the office.
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:40:22 PM) There is no difference between the 2 rounds. The benefit to Round 1 is getting the decision earlier thus being able to sign up for prerequisites courses after finding out whether you are admitted.
AMBA (Feb 19, 2009 2:40:34 PM) Sarah, in that case will you return the original degree certificates?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:40:34 PM) AMBA - No, anything submitted to us becomes property of the University. You can submit copies of international transcripts for the review process. You will show originals later in the process.
Sai (Feb 19, 2009 2:40:36 PM) Regarding my earlier question about prerequisite, I see that you have a list of equivalent courses for the SF area but I am currently in New York. Presumably, I should find a corresponding college course here and check with the admissions department if that will suffice?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:40:36 PM) Hello Sai, Exactly. Make sure that the course is at least 3.0 semester units or 5.0 quarter units, and email us the course description at ewmbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu. If you can get a copy of the course syllabus, that would help us get you an answer more quickly.
SecondTry (Feb 19, 2009 2:40:55 PM) Can you reapply to the school more than once?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:40:55 PM) SecondTry - Yes.
coolfunsport (Feb 19, 2009 2:41:04 PM) What has been the professional background mix of students applying to this program?

Gaurav (Feb 19, 2009 2:41:54 PM) As a reapplicant, is it better to submit 2 letters of recommendation instead of the 1 that is required?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:41:54 PM) Guarav, only one letter is required.
Gaurav (Feb 19, 2009 2:41:58 PM) I am not sure my first question made it through. Is there an advantage to submitting two letters of recommendation as a reapplicant?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:41:58 PM) Absolutely, and I usually recommend it if you can get two. A lot can change in one year!
janice (Feb 19, 2009 2:44:17 PM) Hi, I decided rather late to apply for this program in the fall, and planning to apply for round 2. My GMAT is scheduled next week, but wondering how much of GMAT score will be in consideration.
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:44:17 PM) We take a holistic approach to evaluating applicants and equally weigh all parts of the application. That being said, if your GMAT score is on the lower end, you could make up for it with a stronger GPA, letters of recommendation and interview. Students entering the MBA program in fall 2007 had an average GMAT score of 700 (most scoring between 620-750) and an average GPA of 3.3.
Gaurav (Feb 19, 2009 2:44:44 PM) Do I need to inform the admissions committee if I decide to switch jobs after the application deadline has passed?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:44:44 PM) Yes, and this is important because we do verify your current and previous employment when you are admitted. Email us at ewmbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu and we can send you an Employment Update Form to complete.
Vero (Feb 19, 2009 2:45:43 PM) hello, I sent all my transcripts directly from the schools I attended to Admissions so they will not arrive in one supplemental packet. Is this ok?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:45:43 PM) That is not a problem. After the admission deadline, we will match up all mailed materials to applicants' files.
MBAEnthu (Feb 19, 2009 2:46:35 PM) I completed my interview and am waiting for the results. How many student will you offer admission to in the first round results in mid may'09.
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:46:35 PM) MBAEnthu, we do not have specific numbers of admits per round. By May 2009, we hope to have built a well-qualified class of 240 students.
mfoor (Feb 19, 2009 2:46:38 PM) Do you consider one who applied more than 5 years ago and to the full time program as "reapplicant"
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:46:38 PM) We do not consider someone who applied more than 5 years ago as a reapplicant. If you applied to full time within the past 2 years, then yes, we do consider you a reapplicant.
mfoor (Feb 19, 2009 2:46:58 PM) If an applicant has two GMAT scores, which one do you evaluate? the highest, last, average?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:46:58 PM) mfoor, we look at the highest GMAT score.
Rob (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:27 PM) At the risk of being forward, is it possible to receive an early notification of admission? For those that work outside of the area bay area, it might be of benefit to officially notify the employer of a change of status, find housing, etc.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:27 PM) Hello Rob, Unfortunately, due to the number of applications we are dealing with, we are not able to offer early notifications.
NMS (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:35 PM) Are interviews required for everyone who is close to admission, or is this kind of a tie-breaker sort of tool?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:35 PM) NMS - we interview 2/3 of our applicants. Interviews are an important part of the admissions process.
claire (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:49 PM) Will I lower my chances of acceptance if I state that in my cohort preference that I can only do evenings (as opposed to saying that I prefer weekdays but could do weekends) ?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:49 PM) No, this will not affect your chances of admission. Normally about 95% of applicants get their preferred cohort.
naw (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:49 PM) If an international student have their original transcripts sent direct from their college and does not get admission, can HAS send the same to another college or be used as reference that they received original transcripts from my college?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:47:49 PM) naw - Transcripts received become property of the University and are not sent between schools nor used as a reference.
Dmitriy A (Feb 19, 2009 2:48:55 PM) If we're admitted, do we pay the tuition all upfront at the start of the year, or do we pay in installments?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:48:55 PM) Dmitriy, tuition is paid in installments either by semester or month.
MBAEnthu (Feb 19, 2009 2:49:07 PM) Approximately how many candidates will be offered admission in the first round
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:49:07 PM) Hello MBAEnthu, For competitive reasons, we cannot release those statistics. I can tell you that the admittance rate is about the same for R1 vs. R2.
Jorge B. (Feb 19, 2009 2:49:27 PM) Can we submit more than 2 letters of recommendation if we have multiple supervisors?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:49:27 PM) Jorge - Please submit only 2 LORs. If you are placed on the waitlist, you will be able to send an additional.

Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:50:00 PM) Winner - the per unit pricing for 2007-2008 was $2145.00 per unit. 42 units are required to graduate = approximately $90,000.
Rajcrt (Feb 19, 2009 2:50:10 PM) Should technical resumes with buzz words be dumbed down?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:50:10 PM) Rajcrt - No. Our admissions committee is highly skilled in assessing resumes and various backgrounds.
naw (Feb 19, 2009 2:50:29 PM) Hi, am not sure my question was received, it ok if my GMAT scores are received by March 2, or what happens if not received by application deadline
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:50:29 PM) naw, GMAT scores must be received on or before the application deadline of March 2, 2009.
Vero (Feb 19, 2009 2:50:34 PM) Hello, do you ever accept students with a very poor undergrad academic record into the program but that have shown change in the course of their professional career?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:50:34 PM) Yes, absolutely. In those cases, we are looking for the rest of the application and interview to be outstanding.
mba09 (Feb 19, 2009 2:51:36 PM) Can you tell if the interview sessions for round-1 applicants are over? What % of the applicants are called for interview? What is the criteria for calling a candidate for interview?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:51:36 PM) mba09, we interview approximately 2/3 of our applicant pool. Interviews are conducted from the application deadline through to the decision date.
claire (Feb 19, 2009 2:51:57 PM) If one of my jobs was a nonprofit, then how to I complete the question as to my annual sales?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:51:57 PM) claire, you may leave that section blank.
Jeff (Feb 19, 2009 2:52:17 PM) I took the GMAT on Monday and will be able to report my score in the app. However, Haas may not receive the official from GMAC until after March 2. Does this disqualify me?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:52:17 PM) Hi Jeff - No, it does not disqualify you! Please report your scores (with the exception of the AWA score) in your application. When you receive your AWA score, please email us at ewmbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu. The GMAT can be taken as late as March 2 for Round 2.
Jeff (Feb 19, 2009 2:52:42 PM) If accepted I'd like to select the weeknight cohort, but may be working in a job this summer that requires 70% travel. We're going through tremendous work transitions so do not have much visibility. Will I have any flexibility to change come June/July timeframe?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:52:42 PM) Jeff - When that time comes, we will work with you. Please be in touch with our office.
jmraz (Feb 19, 2009 2:52:56 PM) My employer has put a temporary hold on any reimbursement or financial support associated with an MBA. If I have started my application, but wish to hold off on submitting until '10 when this policy is hopefully changed, will the data I've already provided still be available or will it be erased?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:52:56 PM) We purge all unsubmitted application data at the end of the admissions cycle in June.
Marina Shrago (Feb 19, 2009 2:53:18 PM) In the hobbies/other activities section of the application do you prefer a list of activities or a short description of activity and its impact?

vj (Feb 19, 2009 2:53:57 PM) I came to US when I was 16 and did my under grad here. I have had only one employer since I graduated. whom can I get the second letter from? the host family when I came here is good?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:53:57 PM) vj, professional recommendations are highly preferred. A good second option may be a second level supervisor or a former direct supervisor.
app10 (Feb 19, 2009 2:53:57 PM) In response to a question asked earlier regarding what employment history to add, Tammy responded that we should list what we would on a resume. Usually, I tailor my resumes for the position I'm applying for (leaving out any unnecessary information) . But as I see it, almost all my previous jobs have qualities that would be beneficial for b school. Should I list them all? It will be more than 1 page, and possibly 2.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:53:57 PM) app10 - Great question. If you have extensive experience, by all means give us 2 pages of your resume!
Dmitriy A (Feb 19, 2009 2:54:04 PM) I'm updating my resume for the application, and my current position has enough responsibilities over the last 2 years to fill a page. Should I just abbreviate it to key points and assume that the admissions staff will know what the position entails in general, or should I err on the side of caution and make it as detailed (and long) as necessary?
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:54:04 PM) Please err on the side of brevity. One or two pages is preferred.
Joaquin (Feb 19, 2009 2:54:18 PM) My understanding from looking at your website is that the EWMBA is a cohorts program. Does this mean our classes are chosen by the program? If I choose Evening cohort, can I take classes in the weekend?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:54:18 PM) The first year it is required that you take either the weekend cohort OR evening cohort and that you take the required core classes. The following 2 years you can take both evening and weekend classes.
rt (Feb 19, 2009 2:55:30 PM) I also need to know how to get an appointment for a waiver exam. I've been to the prereq site, and there is a PDf showing topics and study guides, but no directions on how to set up an appt to actually take the test
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:55:30 PM) You can register through the Events page on our home page.https://ssl.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/eventsew/
AMBA (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:00 PM) Can we take waiver exam more than once in a calendar year?

app10 (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:29 PM) Do all transcripts need to be received by 3/2? Scanned copies are not acceptable right?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:29 PM) Transcripts need to be postmarked by March 2nd. If your University is international, please do your best to order certified copies from your school. If your international institution does not issue official duplicate copies of your transcripts or degree certificates, or if certified copies do not arrive by the deadline, please submit photocopies of the originals by the application deadline. If you are recommended for admission, certified copies will be required.
app10 (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:35 PM) For the GPA we list, should we list cumulative GPA (from all schools we attended in undergrad) or only from the graduating institution?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:35 PM) Only calculate your cumulative GPA from your graduating institution. Grading scales can be different at varying schools.
Sai (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:37 PM) Regarding company revenue information in the application - I have only been able to find overall revenue stats for the company rather than my specific division and I think it will be difficult to obtain the detail in most cases. Is this okay?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:37 PM) Sai, use your best judgment and provide the information you are able to obtain.
AMBA (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:46 PM) Can you take waiver exam more than once?
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:56:46 PM) You may only take it once per year.
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:57:37 PM) Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us. The chat will be wrapping up in a few minutes. We greatly appreciate your questions. We apologize for not getting to everyone. Please check back on our website next week for a transcript of today’s chat and for future chat dates. Elisabeth, Tammy, Julia and I will continue to address some questions already in the cue, but we will not be forwarding additional questions.
Rajcrt (Feb 19, 2009 2:58:08 PM) In what cases do you waive TOEFL?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 2:58:08 PM) The Graduate Division requires that all applicants who received their degrees from countries in which the official language is not English take the TOEFL exam. Only applicants who have already completed one or more years of full-time academic study towards an advanced degree in a US institution, with grades of B or better, are exempt. No waivers will be granted.
Jeff (Feb 19, 2009 2:58:11 PM) Does Hass recommend any study guides for the States and Calc waiver exams? Also, have the dates been set yet? I plan to take the test in May
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:58:11 PM) The May exam will be posted soon, and we are hoping to have it on a Saturday. Here are the study guides: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/WaiverExams.pdf
Sai (Feb 19, 2009 2:58:45 PM) Thank you all. This has been extremely informative.
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 2:58:46 PM) You are very welcome.
MBAEnthu (Feb 19, 2009 2:59:48 PM) Why does EWMBA take a long time to post results... Mid November to mid March is 4 months. Typical MBA results are out in 3 months
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 2:59:48 PM) Great question. We try to interview as many applicants (roughly 2/3 of all applicants, but often times more) as possible. In order to squeeze everyone in, we need the extra time.
SecondTry (Feb 19, 2009 3:00:14 PM) Should the resume be 1-page only? Or detailed and can be 2-3 pages long?
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 3:00:14 PM) SecondTry, please submit a version of your resume that you would submit to a potential employer.
mfoor (Feb 19, 2009 3:01:02 PM) what is the range of GPAs (80%) of accepted applicants?
Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 3:01:02 PM) The average GPA is 3.3.
Admissions_Sarah (Feb 19, 2009 3:02:50 PM) Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us. We greatly appreciate your questions. We apologize for not getting to everyone. Please check back on our website next week for a transcript of today's chat and for future chat dates.
Admissions_Elisabeth (Feb 19, 2009 3:03:06 PM) Thank you all for your participation today. We look forward to receiving your applications.

Admissions_Julia (Feb 19, 2009 3:03:25 PM) No. Once a decision has been made, it is final. However, you are welcome to reapply the following year.
Admissions_Tammy (Feb 19, 2009 3:03:39 PM) Thank you everyone! And best of luck with the next round.
