Sarah Thompson– Admissions Assistant Elisabeth Merkel– Assistant Director Molly Kihanya – Acting Director Tammy Soulsby– Admissions Coordinator Aija Gamburg– Admissions Coordinator

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 1:59:17 PM) Welcome to the Berkeley Evening & Weekend MBA chat. My name is Tammy and I will be moderating the chat today. I would like to introduce Molly Kihanya, Acting Director of Admissions, Elisabeth Merkel, Assistant Director, and Sarah Thompson, Admissions Assistant.

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 1:59:47 PM) This chat is moderated. Your questions are put into a cue to be answered, so do not be alarmed if we do not respond to you immediately. It is best if you send one question at a time and please do not resend your questions multiple times. They will not be answered more quickly and it may slow us down. Please send us your questions!

Roby (Nov 12, 2008 2:05:10 PM) My first question is - do recruiters tend to differentiate between full time and part time MBA graduates as far as jobs are concerned?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:05:11 PM) Roby , No recruiters are just looking for your experience and the best fit for their organization.

arthur (Nov 12, 2008 2:06:13 PM) Does being a Cal graduate (bachelor's and master's) put me at any advantage or disadvantage?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:06:13 PM) Arthur - No, being a Cal grad does not put you at any advantage or disadvantage.

Girimonte
(Nov 12, 2008 2:07:01 PM) I graduated undergrad in June 2003 and haven’t taken any math or statistics courses since then. How do I sign up for a "Waiver Exam" and how do you recommend I prepare for the exams?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:07:01 PM) Girimonte, our office will be sending out an email regarding the January waiver exams. You can find a list of the waiver exam topics at http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/req.html#prereq

Lindsey Lincoln (Nov 12, 2008 2:07:20 PM) I was wondering what events in the Spring you would be holding for prospective students to learn more about the program. I have attended some information sessions and plan to apply in round two, so I am interested in learning more about the program in the new year.

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:07:20 PM) Hi Lindsey - We will be holding information sessions in Spring as well. For further insights into the program, please visit the message board, listen to the podcasts, and view the current student blog, all available here: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/

rahula (Nov 12, 2008 2:08:01 PM) Hi! As far as the math/stats class requirements are concerned, can these be addressed after submitting the application?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:08:01 PM) Rahula, yes, the prerequisites can be addressed after you have submitted your application. They MUST, however, be completed prior to August 7, 2009.

dasu (Nov 12, 2008 2:08:32 PM) How do you evaluate leadership potential in an engineer working in a big company, where moving to management or leadership positions takes considerable time?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:08:33 PM) Dasu, we look at variety of areas such as: project management, team leadership, international experience. You can have leadership experience without being a manager.

Madhu (Nov 12, 2008 2:09:09 PM) What is the minimum GPA for admission?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:09:09 PM) Madhu, there is no minimum GPA requirement for admission; however, the median GPA last year was 3.3.

sur (Nov 12, 2008 2:10:08 PM) What are you looking for suitable candidate this year for admissions?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:10:08 PM) Sur - we are looking for a well-balanced application.

maymaj (Nov 12, 2008 2:10:09 PM) How do we confirm that you received our transcripts?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:10:09 PM) Within 6 weeks of the deadline, we will contact you with the status of your application. You can check your status anytime by logging in to your application status page.

Leslie-Ann (Nov 12, 2008 2:11:24 PM) Hello, I'm planning to apply by the March 2 deadline and have some questions about my GMAT scores. I took the test last month and had my scores sent, but didn't do as well as I had hoped so I'm taking it again in December. My verbal score was extremely high, but I can do better on the math. What percentile should I target for the quantitative to be competitive? How important is the balance between quant and verbal? When I take it again, will admissions look only at the highest score or will they consider both?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:11:24 PM) Leslie-Ann , the median score for incoming class was 700 on the GMAT. 80% of our enrolled students scored between 640-750. We do look at the balance of the quant and verbal sections. Often, applicants that score lower than they wanted on the quant section will take the math and statistics pre-requisites. We will look at your highest score when evaluating your application.

RD (Nov 12, 2008 2:11:43 PM) I have an undergraduate degree from a university outside United States. I am currently living and working in California. Do the transcripts and GPA certificate from my university need to reach you before the Nov 17th first round deadline or is it possible to submit a copy that I have with me and provide the originals later on?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:11:43 PM) RD - for international transcripts, we will accept copies upon submission of your application. If recommended for admission you will be required to provide originals.

Linda (Nov 12, 2008 2:13:03 PM) If I am no longer full-employed in the middle of the program (say I quit my job or lose my job) , can I stay in the program? Can I transfer to full-time MBA?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:13:03 PM) Hi Linda, There are some students who have been laid off while in the EWMBA program. Transferring to the full-time program is very difficult. There are only a few spots available each year and it must be at the end of your 1st year. Also, you have to go through an application process again.

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:13:05 PM) Hi arthur, Leadership experience is important, and we admit applicants from all industries and job functions. Take a look at our fall 2008 class profile: http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/class.html

Grace (Nov 12, 2008 2:13:33 PM) Is there a disadvantage to applying in Round 2 vs Round 1?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:13:34 PM) Grace, there is no disadvantage to applying Round 2 vs Round 1. The only difference is that 100% of people that apply in Round 1 receive their first choice in cohort preference while 95% of those who apply in Round 2 receive their first choice of cohort preference.

TP (Nov 12, 2008 2:14:06 PM) Hello, I had a question regarding the word limit on the essays. Would it be a big penalty if the limit is exceeded by 25 words on the short essays?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:14:07 PM) TP, there is no penalty per se, but use your best judgment.

CK (Nov 12, 2008 2:14:54 PM) Are the acceptance rates different for different age groups? For example, do older or younger age groups have a proportionally better chance at admission because of their age group?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:14:54 PM) We do not consider age as part of the application process. Average years of work experience for the fall 2008 class was 8 years, and we highly recommend a minimum of 4 years of work experience.

sur
(Nov 12, 2008 2:15:24 PM) How about GMAT? What is the weight?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:15:24 PM) The admissions committee reviews the application holistically - there is no weight percentage given to GMAT scores.

cyan (Nov 12, 2008 2:16:40 PM) I'm not sure if you got this question, but if I am wanting to apply for round 1 and my reference turns in their letter past Nov 17th will my application then be considered in round 2 despite the rest of my application being complete?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:16:40 PM) cyan - If you complete the application and hit the submit button on or before Nov. 17th, you will be considered in Round 1, however your application remains incomplete and unreviewable until your recommenders submit their letters.

Naow (Nov 12, 2008 2:16:43 PM) Hi, I finished my B.COM in August 2007 at the University of Nairobi, Kenya and am interested in joining Berkeley fall 2009, could you please let me know if I qualify

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:16:43 PM) Naow, generally our Evening & Weekend MBA students have an average of 8 years of work experience.

Linda (Nov 12, 2008 2:17:14 PM) Is the on campus job fair for full time MBA open to part time MBA students? Thanks.

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:17:14 PM) Linda, on-campus recruiting is also open to EWMBA students in their 2nd and 3rd years.

Roby (Nov 12, 2008 2:18:12 PM) Why is there a different in the length of average work experience for the full time and part time programs?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:18:12 PM) Roby - These demographics simply reflect the profile of our students.

Linda (Nov 12, 2008 2:19:01 PM) If you didn't receive my transcripts within 6 weeks after the deadline, can I still resend them?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:19:02 PM) Hi Linda - Yes, you will be given the opportunity to resubmit them.

eric (Nov 12, 2008 2:19:31 PM) How does one sign up for classes? Are they different for core classes and electives?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:19:32 PM) Eric, We only offer class visits for elective courses. Here is the link, Class visit: https://ssl.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/ClassVisitsEW/ Please note that most class visits are full for the semester and we'll post new classes in late January.

rahula (Nov 12, 2008 2:19:55 PM) Thanks, Elisabeth. My next question: I have a dismal GPA (I graduated 6.5 years ago) . I have my reasons for that. I have taken some CS (my major) courses since then. Will that with a decent GMAT + 5+ years of progressive work exp. help address my academics?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:19:55 PM) Rahula - any work you have done between your undergraduate education and now will add value to your application, as will a strong GMAT. If you feel the need for further explanation, please use the optional essay to further elaborate on your academic background.

Mahesh (Nov 12, 2008 2:20:18 PM) Elisabeth, regarding Madhus question on GPA, is it the undergrad Median or the grad Median or both?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:20:18 PM) Mahesh , 3.3 is the median undergraduate GPA.

Tilman (Nov 12, 2008 2:21:32 PM) Hi, I'm planning to apply by the R1 deadline. I took the GMAT in Dec 05 and had my score reported to Haas at that time. Would that report still be in your files?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:21:32 PM) Hi Tilman - we only keep documents up to two years. Please have your scores resubmitted.

smario (Nov 12, 2008 2:22:48 PM) Is age an issue? I am 39 now, it is too old?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:22:48 PM) smario, we do not consider age as a criteria for admission. We consider your work experience and professional accomplishments along with your academics and personal qualities.

Madhu
(Nov 12, 2008 2:23:28 PM) Are you expecting an increase in applicants this year compared to previous years?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:23:28 PM) We actually don't know - we will see November 17 (but we don't release numbers until summer) .

dasu (Nov 12, 2008 2:23:47 PM) What are the typical career paths of MBA graduates in the hi-tech industry? Do MBA graduates do project management, etc or do they typically move to sales or executive positions?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:23:47 PM) dasu, it's hard to say. About half of our graduates continue in their companies and accelerate their careers.

arthur (Nov 12, 2008 2:23:52 PM) Can one of two letters or recommendation come a faculty member at Haas or do you prefer employer letters?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:23:52 PM) Arthur, we prefer that letters of recommendation come from a current or former direct supervisor.

Linda (Nov 12, 2008 2:24:45 PM) Thank you, Molly. Do I have to stay employed during the program? If I quit my job, I can still stay in the program, right?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:24:46 PM) The EWMBA program is designed for working professionals. We understand that circumstances may change, however.

kizito (Nov 12, 2008 2:25:27 PM) How do I take the GMAT test?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:25:27 PM) Please go to www.mba.com for more information on how to register.

rahula (Nov 12, 2008 2:25:29 PM) I graduated from a Canadian university that uses a percentage system. Is there a way to (roughly) gauge what my GPA must be?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:25:29 PM) Hi rahula - It is not necessary for you to convert to the US GPA system. The admissions committee is skilled in accessing transcripts.

eric (Nov 12, 2008 2:26:19 PM) I took some classes at a junior college after receiving my BA. Can I add those grade points into my college GPA? If not, should I mention a significant increase in GPA in the optional essay instead?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:26:19 PM) eric, please keep your BA GPA separate. You should include your post BA coursework transcripts and we will review those.

KL (Nov 12, 2008 2:27:22 PM) If we have been taking business classes through the UC Berkeley extension to expand our business knowledge ahead of MBA school (but have not completed a certificate) , do we need to submit a transcript for that as well?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:27:22 PM) Hi KL - Transcripts for courses taken outside of a degree are not required unless relevant to the application.

Roby (Nov 12, 2008 2:27:35 PM) Is part time/intern work experience counted/considered while applying?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:27:35 PM) Roby , we will consider all of your experience. However, we primarily look at your professional work experience post-undergrad.

RD (Nov 12, 2008 2:28:06 PM) Does the application status show information such as what part(s) of the application you have already received. Example, official GMAT scores, recommendation letters, etc.

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:28:06 PM) Hi RD - You will get an email when we process your application (within 6 weeks after the submission deadline) that either confirms receipt of your complete application, or lets you know what is missing, and allows you to resend it.

smario (Nov 12, 2008 2:28:45 PM) Hi Molly, compared to last year, do you see more or less applicants for EWMBA? Any impact from the financial crisis?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:28:45 PM) smario, our first deadline is Monday, November 17. I am not sure how the financial crisis will impact the numbers.

Lindsey Lincoln (Nov 12, 2008 2:29:08 PM) My question was regarding admission events in the Spring Semester. I have attended information sessions and am now planning to apply in round two. How can I learn more about the program during the Spring?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:29:08 PM) Hi Lindsey, We will post additional class visits in the spring at the end of January. I would also refer to our student blog at: http://berkeleyewmbastudents.blogspot.com/ Feel free to stop by our office or call anytime as well: (510) 642-0292

mike (Nov 12, 2008 2:29:19 PM) How much does our current employment weigh in on the admissions decision? Would a management position count more towards admission than a lower level employee?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:29:19 PM) mike , we take your entire employment history and professional accomplishments into consideration.

Girimonte (Nov 12, 2008 2:29:39 PM) May you apply for more than one MBA program at the same time? Full-time, Haas-Columbia? Are they situations where you may transfer to different MBA program once admitted?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:29:39 PM) Correct, you may only apply to one Berkeley Graduate program per year. Transferring from the Evening & Weekend MBA program to the Full-Time MBA program is possible after the first year of core courses are completed, but on a space-available basis only and by application.

Leslie-Ann (Nov 12, 2008 2:31:10 PM) Is it possible to visit a class or two to observe while considering the program? How would I arrange this?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:31:10 PM) The following link lists courses open to visitors this semester: https://ssl.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/ClassVisitsEW/ Many classes are full, so please check back periodically. Additional class visits will be available in late January.

renderman (Nov 12, 2008 2:32:08 PM) When you say 4 years work experience is minimal, does doing internship in Research Institution / working as a Research Assistantship / Teaching Assistantship count? Thanks!

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:32:08 PM) The admissions committee does take this experience into consideration, however it is not counted in your years of work experience.

Roby (Nov 12, 2008 2:32:47 PM) You mentioned that 4 years of work experience min is highly recommended. I have 3 years of full time work experience + a Masters degree in engineering. Are my chances of getting admitted very weak? How many students (in terms of percentage or numbers) were admitted last year who has =< 3 years of work experience?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:32:47 PM) Roby , 80% of our students admitted last year had between 5 and 12 years of work experience. We did have a few that had 3 years of work experience. You are welcome to apply. I cannot comment on your chances.

arthur (Nov 12, 2008 2:32:48 PM) How many years of experience do the full-time MBA students have before starting their studies?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:32:48 PM) On average, full-time MBA students have 5 years of work experience prior to starting the program. EWMBA students have on average, 8 years.

Grace (Nov 12, 2008 2:33:18 PM) What percentage of your applicants are typically granted an interview?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:33:18 PM) 2/3 of our applicants are invited to an interview.

Pb (Nov 12, 2008 2:33:48 PM) I have an experience of 4 years - do I have a good chance for part time? As I also have a start up of my own

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:33:48 PM) We recommend applicants have 3-4 years of work experience to be competitive.

arthur (Nov 12, 2008 2:34:22 PM) Is funding support available for persons of color or any other disadvantaged group?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:34:22 PM) The EWMBA program offers one GRANT for people in the public and not-for-profit industries. We do not offer any other grants.

RD (Nov 12, 2008 2:34:53 PM) The application status page shows information about a) Recommendations b) Transcripts c) Prerequisites. What about GMAT scores? How can I verify that was received by the admissions and is included in my application

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:34:53 PM) Hello RD, Please just verify that you reported the correct scores with your application.

Naow (Nov 12, 2008 2:36:09 PM) I worked for an international company for 8 years since 2001 same job but did my undergraduate part time, does this help?

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 2:36:09 PM) Generally the professional work experience means a position that requires an undergraduate degree, but of course applicants have various backgrounds, and some have worked in a professional position already during their undergraduate studies. Please create an employment record for the position in your application.

Mahesh (Nov 12, 2008 2:36:23 PM) Sarah, following up on cyan 's question, so if the recommender submits the letter before the 2nd deadline, will cyan be considered against candidates in the first round or the second?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:36:23 PM) Mahesh - The first round because he submitted his application on or before Nov. 17th. But his application will not be looked at until the recommender submits.

Mahesh (Nov 12, 2008 2:36:44 PM) Elisabeth, would you happen to have the median GPA for grad students? Also, do grad students have any advantage/preference over under grads in the selection process?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:36:44 PM) Mahesh , I do not have the median GPA for graduate degrees. In order to keep the playing field as level as possible, we look at the undergraduate education of all applicants. Grad students do not have any advantage/preference over undergrads in the selection process; however, we do look at graduate degrees and assess their value as pertains to that specific candidate.

sravan (Nov 12, 2008 2:37:23 PM) Am curious about Haas@work; How long is it going to be at client site and how full time employees are able to manage their current work along with this innovative idea; Is the work at client side in the evening hours?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:37:23 PM) sravan, the haas@work program is 2 phases. The first includes one prep day and one meeting with executives where you present your ideas that will be decided upon. The executives will determine which idea or ideas will be implemented in 100 days and a subset of students will be selected for implementation. EWMBA students are very involved in Haas@work and have figured out ways to make this work with their schedules.

arthur (Nov 12, 2008 2:38:15 PM) Since my transcripts are from U.C. Berkeley (undergrad and graduate divisions) are my grades automatically viewable by Haas or shall I submit them separately?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:38:15 PM) arthur - No, we cannot view them. Please request to have your official transcripts sent to our office.

Madhu (Nov 12, 2008 2:38:21 PM) Does having an MS, PHD, or even LD give one a better chance for admission?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:38:21 PM) 43% of our recently admitted students have an advanced degree. We will take that into consideration with the rest of your application.

jcase28 (Nov 12, 2008 2:38:43 PM) Hi, I would like to talk with current students or alumni in my industry of interest (biotech/pharma) - is this type of communication available?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:38:43 PM) Yes, please contact us at ewmbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu.

arthur (Nov 12, 2008 2:39:00 PM) May one letter of recommendation come not from a current supervisor (just started a new job) but from a past supervisor? I would put myself at a disadvantage professionally if I were to state that I was already looking for a another opportunity (Haas MBA) after accepting new employment.

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:39:00 PM) Arthur, you may submit a recommendation from a previous supervisor if you feel that person can write thoughtfully and thoroughly on your behalf. However, please be sure to include in your application why you are not choosing to ask your current supervisor.

cynthia (Nov 12, 2008 2:40:23 PM) What is your admittance rate for reapplicants? I'm concerned that my application may not be strong enough due to my GMAT score. Should I wait to apply until I can get my GMAT score higher 80% to be a stronger candidate? How would you view an candidate apply if the only thing that were to change was their GMAT score?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:40:23 PM) cynthia, I would recommend that you submit your application when it is the strongest you can make it. You are welcome to reapply with new GMAT scores.

rahula (Nov 12, 2008 2:41:19 PM) What is the best place to describe complex fami ly problems that cause issues not only with academics but also other parts of life that show I may have done nothing with my life during that time. I'd like to use the tell me about yourself essay for current things I do. (interview? Separate letter explaining situations?)

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:41:19 PM) You can use the optional essay if you decide not to use the main essay.

Desmond (Nov 12, 2008 2:42:24 PM) Hi, what are the pros of applying in R1 vs. R2

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 2:42:25 PM) The benefits of applying in R1 are that you will receive your decision earlier, and you will have a better chance of getting your preferred cohort (Evening vs. Weekend) . The application requirements are the same for both rounds, though, so if you feel that you need more time to have as strong an application as possible, you may want to consider applying in R2.

rahula (Nov 12, 2008 2:43:04 PM) Is it possible to submit a reference letter from a previous-manager-now-mentor. This manager managed me 3+ years ago but we meet regularly and knows me better than most others. (I'm concerned about the lapse of time since he last managed me)

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:43:04 PM) Rahula, yes, you may submit a recommendation from a previous manager as long as that person can write a thoughtful and thorough recommendation on your behalf and is privvy to your current professional status and responsibilities.

mike (Nov 12, 2008 2:43:53 PM) By full time experience, does contracting consulting time count? I have done mostly contract work since undergrad. Does that affect the admissions?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:43:53 PM) Contracting time is full time experience and it does count. We'll look at the quality of your work experience as we do with other applicants.

Grace (Nov 12, 2008 2:44:25 PM) What sort of consideration (if any) is given to the educational backgrounds of the individuals preparing letters of recommendation?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:44:25 PM) It's not a consideration.

Livia (Nov 12, 2008 2:45:30 PM) HI Tammy, I was wondering whether applying on 2nd round would reduce our chances of being admitted compared to the 1st round? Is there any other disadvantage of applying 2nd round other than getting the decision result later...? Do you save some space for the 2nd round applicants?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:45:30 PM) Hi Livia, We've actually found that the admittance rate is the same comparing both rounds. We do see a larger number of applications for Round 2, but your chances of getting admitted are the same.

Kal (Nov 12, 2008 2:46:04 PM) I did my undergrad from outside of US, I have been in the US from last eight years. My undergrad was in English, do I still need to take TOEFL.

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 2:46:04 PM) If your undergraduate degree is from a country where English is not the official language, and you do not have at least one year of full-time graduate studies from the US institution, you will need to take the TOEFL, regardless of the language of instruction.

Linda (Nov 12, 2008 2:46:23 PM) I have a Ph.D in Engineering, do I have to take the waiver exam or take another math/statistic course?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:46:23 PM) Linda - There are two ways to meet the prerequisites: Taking a course within five years of August 2009 for 3 semester units (5 quarter units) with a grade of B or better. Kal (Nov 12, 2008 2:46:45 PM) What was the ranking of HAAS this year, how many students graduated this year and how many got placed through HAAS on campus interviews

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:46:45 PM) Kal, unfortunately, we do not have that data at this time. In 2007 US News & World Report ranked the Haas Part-Time MBA at #5.

Madhu (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:04 PM) I previously applied to the full time program. Can I get only one recommendation also or must I procure two?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:04 PM) Madhu - Two letters are required.

smario (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:07 PM) Do all applicants get interview? If not, what is the roughly the percentage?

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:07 PM) We interview approximately 2/3 of the applicants each year.

renderman (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:17 PM) Just a quick follow up, when it is full time grad student doing Research Assistant or Teaching Assistant, that doesn't count as working experience, right?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:17 PM) Generally we do not count Research Assistant/Teaching Assistant positions as part of your full-time work experience.

JimT (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:28 PM) Re: recommendations (sorry if this is a repeat) : Is it best to have different employers write the recommendations or is the CEO and immediate supervisor of the same company OK? Does it matter?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:48:28 PM) JimT - that decision is yours - who knows you best and who will be able to write the best recommendation on your behalf.

Red Baron (Nov 12, 2008 2:49:58 PM) Do you have a weightage criteria for applicants i.e. if a candidate has a low GMAT, what does his GPA need to be? And vice-versa?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:49:58 PM) We do not. We look at all parts of the application and choose the best overall candidates. To see our class profile, please go to, http://ewmba.haas.berkeley.edu/class.html

Livia (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:20 PM) I know Haas is looking for the best potential candidate. Can you tell us one or two examples of the characteristic you are looking for?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:20 PM) We review all aspects of the application and look for the best candidates overall.

dasu (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:28 PM) Do you expect a technical professional to have business exposure as well? Will having a certificate in a business related field be of any advantage?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:28 PM) dasu, we do not expect a technical professional to have business exposure. Any work that you have done in addition to your day to day should be included in your application and will add value.

nberckes (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:39 PM) Hi! I'm a 2004 graduate from Smith College with four and a half years of work experience in political and non-profit communication, the non-profit experience focusing on sustainable consumption and corporate social responsibility. I'm looking at the evening program to continue to build my professional resume in regards to sustainability, but am wondering if the evening/weekend program is a good fit for someone like me with such diverse leadership and work experience and if the full-time might be a better fit. I am also hoping to do a concentration in the area of sustainability/social impact and be involved in regards to such things on campus - would I be able to do that with the part-time? Thank you so much for your insight!

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:39 PM) nberckes - EWMBA students have the same access to Haas clubs and Centers as full-time MBA students. Of interest to you may be the Center for Responsible Business. Here is a link: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/responsiblebusiness/ In addition, to be a competitive applicant, 3-4 years of work experience is recommended.

ami (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:45 PM) Who reviews the applications?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:50:45 PM) Two to four members of the admissions committee will review your application.

sid (Nov 12, 2008 2:51:00 PM) Do the chances of application vary by which term the application is submitted for. In other words is the number of admissions granted predecided for each term?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:51:00 PM) Hi Sid, We aim for a target class size of 240 every year.

Roby (Nov 12, 2008 2:51:13 PM) Is the professional work experience calculated to the application date? Or till Aug 2009?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:51:13 PM) Through August 2009.

Madhu (Nov 12, 2008 2:51:25 PM) Hello, do you limit the number of admits from any particular racial or ethnic group, for example Indians? If there are a large number of Indian applicants, do you admit then a smaller percentage of them compared to other ethnic groups with fewer applicants?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:51:25 PM) We do not limit the number of admits from any group. We look at the overall strengths of each candidate and choose the best.

Gaurang Patel
(Nov 12, 2008 2:51:55 PM) Hi...I have done MS in computer science with 3.80, Bachelor with 3.85 GPA and working as a software engineer in Sacramento. I have given GMAT and got 470. I would like to know; would I be eligible for getting admission in Berkeley or how much would be the GMAT score you look for giving admission.

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:51:55 PM) Gaurang - You would be at a competitive disadvantage with a GMAT score of 470. Current students have an average GMAT score of 700, with the 80% range of 640-750.

jc (Nov 12, 2008 2:52:08 PM) Do you look to diversify across occupational fields? Is it an advantage to come from an underrepresented field?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:52:08 PM) jc - we do our best to build professionally diverse cohorts. We look at all applicants equally.

Mahesh (Nov 12, 2008 2:52:17 PM) If your class strength is 120 students, do you select half of it in R1 and the other half in R2? How is it distributed? Would you happen to have any data for # of candidates applied/selected from r1 and r2?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:52:17 PM) We don't release those specific statistics, but every year we aim for a target class size of 240. Last year, class size was 242.

Naow (Nov 12, 2008 2:53:25 PM) Since by fall 2009 I will have worked for two years after graduation, will this help or can I apply for full time classes, please advise me.

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 2:53:26 PM) Naow: the average work experience in the EWMBA program is about 8 years, so with 2 years of work experience you would be at a disadvantage against the applicant pool. The average work experience in the Full-time MBA program is 5 years, and they recommend to have at least 2 years of work experience.

mike (Nov 12, 2008 2:53:36 PM) Qhat is the most important factor that the committee takes into consideration?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:53:36 PM) mike - there are several important components to your application: academic background, work experience, personal attributes (essays, extracurricular activities) and the interview.

MBA2010 (Nov 12, 2008 2:53:38 PM) I have solid technical expertise in Business Intelligence and Data warehousing space. And for most part I have been a DBA for few years now. I have also lead teams in Asia Pacific in these areas but my focus has been very technical for few years now. I have over 12 years of Information technology experience. My question - Do I need to have Managerial experience to stand a chance ... There has been progression in terms of my career and I have been an over achiever (technically) ...I am applying for 2010.

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 2:53:38 PM) You do not need to have managerial experience but leadership experience and potential are important.

Angella S. (Nov 12, 2008 2:55:11 PM) Thank you for the response. Going back to my earlier concern, is it preferable that a supervisor from five years ago provide a recommendation (in lieu of my current supervisor) , or a current coworker? Both know the quality of my work very well.

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:55:11 PM) We do strongly prefer that both letters come from a current or former employer, preferably a supervisor, but of utmost importance is how closely your recommenders have worked with you and whether they can attest to your value as an employee, your professional accomplishments, and your personal qualities.

CK (Nov 12, 2008 2:55:12 PM) Is it possible to switch between the Evening and Weekend options between semesters? In other words, can you do 1 semester as weekend classes and the next as evening classes?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 2:55:12 PM) CK - in your first year, during the Core curriculum, you cannot switch between evening and weekend options. In your 2nd & 3rd years, when you are taking electives, your schedule becomes much more flexible and you can choose from classes in either the evening or weekend schedule.

Grace (Nov 12, 2008 2:55:36 PM) Have you received any feedback that you can share regarding GMAT test-prep courses that stand out from others?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:55:36 PM) Hi Grace, the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley does not endorse the following GMAT preparation courses, but they have been recommended by applicants who have taken them. Most state colleges and universities offer courses through their extension programs. We suggest that you call and ask questions about the format of the course, texts used, cost, location, instructor, time commitment involved and find the course that best suits your needs. STANLEY H. KAPLAN EDUCATIONAL CENTER, LTD., THE PRINCETON REVIEW, and TESTPUNDIT.

Roby (Nov 12, 2008 2:56:01 PM) One assigned a cohort, is it possible to change cohorts in the first or second year?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:56:01 PM) Roby - You stay with your cohort for the first year. In your second and third years you may choose electives in either cohort.

Leslie-Ann (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:02 PM) Regarding recommendations, I'm confident my direct supervisor and his manager can speak to my abilities/character/potential. Does the quality of their writing have an impact? I seem to recall a friend who received feedback that his letters were poorly written and therefore suggested he find better writers. Is this way out in left field? Thank you!

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:02 PM) The admissions committee does like to see that recommenders have taken the time to write a thorough recommendation for applicants. I would say, yes, it does makes a difference to see a well-thought out letter.

eric (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:22 PM) You mentioned the median GPA and average GMAT score for the last entering class. Do you know what those numbers are for last years entire applicant pool?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:22 PM) Hi Eric, We do not have those stats.

dasu (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:26 PM) Do you consider activities like community service, etc to evaluate leadership potential? Is this given lesser weightage compared to what the candidate has achieved at work?

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:26 PM) Dasu: we do consider extracurricular activities, and these can be listed in the Supplementary Data question #5. If you do not have a leadership role in your current position, an extracurricular can help your application.

MBA2010 (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:40 PM) Do you have an extension center in South Bay .. if yes where is it ... and what is the schedule (evening or weekend)

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:57:40 PM) MBA2010 - No, we do not have a center/office in the South Bay. Half of the classes in the weekend cohort are held in Santa Clara however.

tiff (Nov 12, 2008 2:58:29 PM) Are the math requirements (college math and stats) required to be completed before the app due date of 3/2/09?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:58:29 PM) The prerequisites of college-level math and statistics are for admission, not the application. They must be completed by the first day of orientation on August 7, 2009.

Preston (Nov 12, 2008 2:59:14 PM) Hello and thanks for being here. Once placed in a 60 student cohort, will those 59 other students remain in your cohort over the final two years or do many students shift around?

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 2:59:14 PM) Preston - You stay with your cohort for the first year. In your second and third years, you may choose electives in either cohort.

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 2:59:32 PM) Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us. The chat will be wrapping up in a few minutes. We greatly appreciate your questions. We apologize for not getting to everyone. Please check back on our website next week for a transcript of today’s chat and for future chat dates. Aija, Molly, Elisabeth, Sarah and I will continue to address some questions already in the cue, but we will not be forwarding additional questions.

ami (Nov 12, 2008 3:00:07 PM) You mentioned both letters of recommendation from current boss. Is that correct?

Admissions_Molly (Nov 12, 2008 3:00:07 PM) One letter of recommendation should be from your current, direct supervisor. The other should be from a former direct supervisor or your boss's boss.

MBA2010 (Nov 12, 2008 3:00:17 PM) I plan to take some pre-course like Business accountancy (Financial/Managerial) besides Business economics...Will such course work add value to what I have been doing?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 3:00:17 PM) MBA2010 - Prospective students must complete prerequisites in mathematics (college algebra or above; calculus is recommended) and statistics. Students without a background in financial accounting, microeconomics and macroeconomics are also strongly encouraged to take classes on their own to fami liarize themselves with these topics.

Bree09 (Nov 12, 2008 3:03:37 PM) Thank you, Tammy. Do you handle questions for Berkely-Columbia EMBA on here as well? If you do, what are the essay questions for BC-EMBA, or where can I find them? I can't seem to find the information from their site. Thank you.

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 3:03:37 PM) Hi Bree! BC doesn't post their questions outside of the application, so you need to create a login account and go into the application: http://www.berkeley.columbia.edu/apply/index.html

Admissions_Sarah (Nov 12, 2008 3:03:39 PM) Thank you for joining us today!

cyan (Nov 12, 2008 3:05:15 PM) Is the pool for the Berkeley-Columbia program more competitive than the EWMBA/Fulltime program? Is there a certain type of person that would be more suited to one program over the other? I understand that the Berk-Col program is for people with more work experience, but what are other attributes that would make an applicant more successful in either program?

Admissions_Aija
(Nov 12, 2008 3:05:15 PM) The average work experience in the Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA program is 12 years, and generally admitted students are in a more senior level position compared to the EWMBA and Full-time program. Of course, many applicants may be suitable for both the Executive and the EWMBA program, so I would encourage you to do more research on both programs by attending an information session and a class visit to get a better sense of which program is a better fit for you.

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 3:05:42 PM) The weekend classes all alternate between the Berkeley campus and the Santa Clara location (currently Sun Microsystems) . There is no option to take all classes at Santa Clara.

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 3:06:32 PM) ami - the GMAT score above 80% range is required to waive the math prerequisite; otherwise, there is no minimum GMAT score required.

Naow (Nov 12, 2008 3:07:05 PM) Do EVMBA applicants require any recommendations from professors?

Admissions_Elisabeth (Nov 12, 2008 3:07:05 PM) Naow - we ask that recommendations come from a current or former direct supervisor.

Roby (Nov 12, 2008 3:07:12 PM) When we say 3-4 years of work experience, is it 3-4 years to application date or 3-4 years by the time you start school in Fall 2009 (aug) ?

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 3:07:12 PM) Roby : the work experience is calculated until the start of the school year, fall 2009.

MBA2010 (Nov 12, 2008 3:07:47 PM) Is it possible for us to have campus tour? Can we interact with existing students along with professors and admission coordinators in person? If so, could you share the schedule?

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 3:07:47 PM) You can schedule a campus tour through visitor services. As for interacting with students/professors, come to a class visit (more will be posted in February) : The following link lists courses open to visitors this semester: https://ssl.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/ClassVisitsEW/ Please register for an available date and course that you would like to visit. Prospective students may only visit One Class Per Academic Year so that we can accommodate all requests. Details will be provided in the email confirmation.

Naow (Nov 12, 2008 3:08:44 PM) Where do I check if international transcripts are acceptable by Haas

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 3:08:44 PM) Please contact us at ewmbaadmhaas.berkeley.edu or call at (510) 642-0292.

jcase28 (Nov 12, 2008 3:09:41 PM) Regarding our resume submission, are the only requirements that it be chronological and 1-2 page length?

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 3:09:41 PM) The resume should also be either a Word document or a PDF in order for you to upload it.

Admissions_Aija (Nov 12, 2008 3:10:01 PM) Thank you all for chatting with us today!

Admissions_Tammy (Nov 12, 2008 3:10:47 PM) Thank you for coming everyone - goodbye!
